BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators in the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue reached a "principled consensus" here on Friday on verifying the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a Chinese official said Friday.     The top negotiators discussed the specific principles of setting up a verification and inspection mechanism, as well as economic and energy aid to the DPRK, the Chinese delegation's spokesman Qin Gang told reporters. BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday began a three-day national mourning for the tens of thousands of people killed in a powerful earthquake which struck the country's southwest on May 12.     At 4:58 a.m., the national flag at the Tian'anmen Square in downtown Beijing flew at half-mast after a complete flag-raising ceremony.     About 2,600 people watched the flag-raising ceremony in the square.     "I have been watching TV to know the disaster situation these days," said Yu Huilin, a 58-year-old retired teacher. Yu just arrived in Beijing by bus in the early hours on Monday from eastern Shandong Province.     "It's really heartrending," she said. "But I see the quake-affected people have got help from so many people. I believe they can recover from the disaster soon rebuild their homes." (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.     The oil giant had 1.67 million staff last year, which meant more than 80,000 of them would be laid-off within three years, Beijing News reported.     The move followed CNPC's earlier announcement to cut non-production spending by 10 percent from a year earlier, the paper said. BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or the Cabinet, has ordered government agencies to take immediate actions to rectify the financial abuses exposed by the National Audit Office (NAO) in late August.     All units that misused funds were required to report their rectification results to the State Council before Oct. 31, according to an executive meeting of the Cabinet Thursday, which was presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The NAO found 29.38 billion yuan (4.32 billion U.S. dollars) worth of "problematic" expenditures after auditing the 2007 state budget spending of 53 ministerial-level departments and 368 of their affiliates.     It also found 258 million yuan of disaster relief funds were embezzled and used for administrative expenses or government construction projects.     The meeting decided that more central agencies shall make public their budgets. Eleven of them did this last year.     The Cabinet also reviewed a draft ordinance complementary for the enforcement of the Labor Contract Law, and decided that further revision has to be done before it could be enacted.     The Labor Contract Law took effect on Jan. 1 and has raised concern in China's corporate world because of its enhanced protection of laborers' rights.

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) urged local governments to strengthen flood control at a meeting here on Thursday.     Water resources authorities should double check the preparation work for the incoming flood season, strengthen monitoring systems and ensure the safety of major rivers and large- and medium-sized reservoirs, it said.     It also asked relevant authorities in quake zones to pay special attention to flood control and protect earthquake victims from fresh dangers.     Flood control precautions and safe water supplies in cities holding competitions for the 2008 Olympic Games in August should be ensured. It added that drought prevention work should also be listed on the agenda.     The SFDH initiated a level-three emergency response to the torrential rains that hit China over the past week causing 57 deaths.
