HOHHOT, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police said Tuesday they had shot and killed an escaped prisoner and apprehended three others in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     The four escaped on Saturday from the No. 2 Prison in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia, after killing a prison guard, said a spokesman from the regional public security department.     Acting on information from local residents, police surrounded the men in Helin County early Tuesday, after they had hijacked a motor tricycle and taken the woman driver hostage.     Police shot dead Gao Bo, who resisted arrest and injured a police officer with knife, said the spokesman. Police searched thousands of hotels, nightclubs and Internet bars, questioned 47,500 people and stopped 24,600 vehicles.     The four prisoners were on the run for only 66 hours before they were apprehended.     "We appreciate the local residents' help in hunting the prisoners," said Zhao Liping, head of the public security department of the region." BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke said here Monday clean energy technology is one of the most beneficial areas for U.S.-China cooperation and also the only way for the two countries to keep sustained economic growth and combat global climate change.     Locke, who accompanied U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to China, made the remarks at the Sino-U.S. clean energy round table conference held here Monday.     It has been Locke's third trip to China since becoming Commerce Secretary in March.     "The United States and China have the power and indeed an obligation to alter history for the benefit of all people on the planet," he said.     As the world's most productive and innovative economies, the U.S. and China are uniquely positioned to create the solar, wind, biofuel and renewable technologies that the world wants and needs, Locke said.     "We can do it by making clean energy the prime engine of the economic growth in the 21st century," he said.     Locke said he plans to lead an energy and trade mission to China next March, which would include U.S. firms from new energy technology sectors and make stops in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities.     U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu also attended the conference, who expressed optimism about U.S.-China cooperation in the deployment and development of clean energy technology.     The conference was co-hosted by China's State Energy Bureau, U.S. Department of Commerce and Department of Energy, in a bid to advance mutual pragmatic cooperation in clean energy and promote the development of clean energy technology and industry.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade in 2009 dropped 13.9 percent from a year earlier to 2.21 trillion U.S. dollars and its trade surplus last year slid 34.2 percent year on year to 196.1 billion U.S. dollars, according to figures released Sunday by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).     In breakdown, China's exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from in 2008, and imports reached 1.01 trillion U.S. dollars, down 11.2 percent from a year earlier, said the GAC.     In December 2009, monthly trade amounted to 243 billion U.S. dollars, which represented a year-on-year increase of 32.7 percent and a month-to-month rise of 16.7 percent.     Last month, China's exports were worth 130.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 17.7 percent from a year earlier. December's imports hit record monthly high to reach 112.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 55.9 percent from the same period of 2008, according to the GAC.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Tuesday called on Iran to "engage constructively" with the P5+1 and to "cooperate fully" with the IAEA to facilitate a satisfactory outcome.     The call was made in a joint statement issued here after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two sides reaffirmed their strong support for a comprehensive and long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through negotiations.     "The two sides agreed that Iran has the right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and it should fulfill its due international obligations under that treaty," said the statement.     The two sides welcomed the talks in Geneva on Oct. 1 between the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and Iran as "a promising start" towards addressing international concerns about Iran's nuclear program, and expressed their readiness to continue that engagement as soon as possible.     They emphasized in the joint statement that all efforts should be made to take confidence building steps and to call on Iran to respond positively to the proposal of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
