BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance announced Monday that the country's fiscal revenue in June rose 19.6 percent year on year to 686.75 billion yuan (100.5 billion U.S. dollars).     However, in the first half of this year, fiscal revenue fell 2.4 percent to 3.398 trillion yuan, said the ministry in a statement on its website.     The growth rate last month was 14.8 percentage points higher than the growth rate in May. Fiscal revenue fell 9.9 percent in the first four months this year from a year earlier to 2.05 trillion yuan due to shrinking business profits hit by the global economic slowdown and active fiscal policies including tax cuts to buoy domestic economic growth.     The ministry attributed the revenue rise in June to the stabilization of overall economic performance, growing business profits and the increase in the cigarette tax.     The government announced on June 20 the tax on cigarette cartons costing 70 yuan or more would rise to 56 percent from 45 percent, and the tax on cigarette cartons costing less than 70 yuan would rise from 30 to 36 percent.     Sales tax revenues rose 63.1 percent year on year in June, with business tax revenues edging up 6.4 percent, but the ministry did not specify the figures.     In June, China's fiscal expenditure increased 21.5 percent to 640.56 billion yuan from a year earlier. From January to June, the figure stood at 2.89 trillion yuan, up 26.3 percent from the same period last year.     The government unveiled a 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package in November last year to be spent over the next two years to shore up the world's third largest economy, with 1.18 trillion yuan from the central government.     Fiscal revenue includes taxes as well as administrative fees and other government income, such as fines and income from state-owned assets.

BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday morning presided over a top-level meeting discussing how to deal with any possible H1N1 influenza epidemic, Health Minister Chen Zhu said at a news briefing.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called together other members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the specific issue, which was triggered by the spread of a new strain of H1N1 virus in North America and other regions.     Hu and other top leaders heard briefings of the country's prevention and preparation for possible epidemic in China, Chen said, adding that the top meeting delayed the scheduled press conference to the afternoon.Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu attends a press conference held by the State Council Information Office of China in Beijing on April 30, 2009. BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso here on Thursday, calling on the two sides to cherish achievements made in bilateral ties.     "Since my visit to Japan in May last year, related parties on the two sides have made every effort to implement the consensus and decisions agreed upon during the visit, and had attained important progress in promoting the strategic and mutually-beneficial relations between China and Japan," Hu told Aso at the Great Hall of the People.     "These achievements have not come easy and should be cherished by us," said Hu.     Hu noted that as the global financial crisis spreads, trade between China and Japan had declined obviously. He urged the two sides to take effective measures to put bilateral trade and investment back on the track of stable growth as soon as possible. Sound cooperation in political and economic fields and the continuous advancement of the strategic and mutually-beneficial relationship between them have laid a solid foundation for the future of this relationship, said the Japanese prime minister.     Aso said it is Japan's wish that the two countries will continue with the close communications at high level, strengthen cooperation in various fields, step up coordination in coping with the international financial and economic crisis, and promote youth exchanges.     Aso arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a two-day China tour, his first official visit to China since he took office in September.

For example, the government raised the tax rebate rate for textiles five times since August, most recently last month when the rate went from 15 percent to 16 percent.

BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The quake-devastated Beichuan county seat in southwest China's Sichuan Province reopened Sunday to residents to mourn the dead ahead of the first anniversary of the disaster.     Some 21,000 people, or two-thirds of the county seat's population, were dead or missing in the 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12 last year, making the county the worst hit in the quake.     The county will be open for four days till Wednesday.     Mourners brought flowers, incense and candles and set off firecrackers in the ruins of former bus stations, county government buildings and homes. The police distributed bottled water to the crowd for free.
