BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior military officials of China and Myanmar agreed on Saturday to strengthen the relations of the two countries and armed forces in an all-around way.     The two countries should enhance military and state-to-state exchanges to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity, said Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), while meeting his Myanmar's counterpart Shwe Mann.     Chen said the two sides have maintained cooperation in various fields, and witnessed smooth development in their military ties.     He hailed the firm support to each other in terms of national development and international affairs, especially those touching on the core interests of both nations.     As good neighbors since ancient times, China and Myanmar have helped each other to fight external aggression and to struggle for respective national independence and liberation in modern history, Chen said.     Shwe Mann, also member of the ruling Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in an all-around way.     He expressed appreciation for China's long-term support to Myanmar and reaffirmed Myanmar's adherence to the one-China policy.

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Tibetan postwoman walking over 200,000 kilometers in ten years to send mails for mountain villagers, a Beijing Olympic champion and a rocket engineer have been selected as Chinese youth's role models in 2008, it was announced on Sunday.      Others honored as the top ten Outstanding Chinese Youth of the Year included two journalists, a worker at a joint venture auto company and a soldier soprano, the All-China Youth Federation, organizer of the annual activity, said in a brief statement.     Although the federation published little information of the ten winners on Sunday, their inspiring stories had been intensively reported through the media.     All of their stories are about selfless devotion to career, remarkable contribution to the well-being of fellow country people, and great inspiration.     Nyima Lamo, a 32-year-old Tibetan woman, has been working as a mailwoman for almost ten years for mountain-locked villages in Deqin County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to a report on the website of the China Central Television (CCTV).     Because poor road conditions made transportation impossible, Nyima Lamo has to walk on foot across deep valleys and snow-capped mountains, often risking her life, in order to send mails to villagers.     She would not take pregnancy leave even when she was nine months pregnant because she did not want to delay letters, the report said, adding that the total length of roads Nyima Lamo had walked was more than 200,000 km.     Zhao Haiqing's story touched millions of Chinese after his hometown in Beichuan County of Sichuan Province was deadly struck by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12.     The 36-year-old village official, also injured in the quake, led fellow villagers to rescue 67 people trapped under debris and transport over 2,100 injured people to hospitals. However, he lost six family members including his son and parents in the earthquake, said a CCTV report.     Defending champion Liu Chunhong broke all the world records in the women's 69 kilogram weightlifting category of the Beijing Olympic Games on Aug. 13, making herself a household name overnight.     Song Zhengyu, a 38-year-old rocket expert, also won nationwide respect for his great contribution to the development of the Long March family of rockets, which successfully sent the manned Shenzhou-7 spacecraft on September 25.     The ten people were selected out of 30 candidates throughout the nation. The awarding ceremony will be held in January 2009.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Monday hailed China's achievements in promoting cultural and ethical progress in 2008 after some major events, including the May 12 earthquake and the Beijing Olympic Games.     In both events, China displayed its "national spirit and the spirit of the times", Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, told a plenary conference of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress.     Li, who presided over the conference as the head of the commission, attributed the achievements to the staunch leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary.     Li called for efforts to build up the system of socialist core values and strengthen cultural and ethical progress so as to create a sound environment for "continuing ideological emancipation, persisting in the reform and opening up, promoting scientific development, and making new victories over building a well-off society in an all-round way."     In 2009, the development of ethical and cultural progress would focus on the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he said.     He called for efforts to deal with moral, cultural and Internet-related problems and try to help youth to grow in a healthy way.     Li said the important role of boosting cultural and ethical progress was a common responsibility for the whole society.     Present at the conference were Liu Yunshan, member of both of the Political Bureau and Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and Liu Yandong, a Political Bureau member and state councilor. However, reports on Tuesday say the disease has been contained and cases are on the decline.     Zimbabwe's health sector got a major boost at the weekend when the country received 140 tons of medical supplies from the United Nations Children's Fund.     Since Zimbabwe declared cholera and the health system a national emergency, a number of donors and diplomats have come in with sizeable donations.     Over the weekend, Tanzania donated 40 tons of medical supplies to fight the cholera epidemic while SADC has launched an emergency request for medical aid.     Last week, the United Nations Population Fund donated five tonsof surgical sundries towards central hospitals' maternity services for a period of at least three months.     A fortnight ago, Namibia responded to Zimbabwean government's request for assistance with a donation of 200,000 dollars worth of drugs.     Two weeks earlier, South Africa had partnered the Zimbabweans government to contain the cholera outbreak in Beitbridge.     Other non-governmental organisations and UN agencies have also assisted through the provision of incentives for staff working in cholera treatment centres, logistics and experienced staff.     The assistance from the donor community is earmarked either for cholera or revival of the health sector.

LIMA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that the central government would take effective measures to help Hong Kong to ward off the impact of the global financial crisis, safeguard the stability of financial markets and boost economic growth.     Hu made the remarks during a meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.     Hu expressed his belief that as long as the HKSAR government and people from all circles could be united, the region would maintain its long-term prosperity and stability.     Donald Tsang briefed the president on his government's efforts in dealing with the current financial crisis and voiced his appreciation for the central government's support to Hong Kong. BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called for a stronger high-level dialogue mechanism with the United States.     "China and the United States should continue to step up their high-level dialogue mechanism for substantive cooperation and stronger bilateral relations," Hu told visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's economy was on sound track but prospects were complicated by the world economic slowdown, said Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of China's central bank, on Sunday.     In a report Zhou made to the fifth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), he said the country's economy was developing as expected, but the world economic slowdown added uncertainties to its prospect.     "Our economy is highly reliant on overseas demand. Slacking exports resulted from the global economic slowdown would have a negative impact on the economy," he said.     He suggested the country need to be cautious in adjusting policies because there are both possibilities of cost-driven price rises and possibilities of continuous price falls in the future.     "Currently, inflation pressure mainly comes from rising cost," he said.     He said in the world, more and more economies began to shift their policies from curbing inflation to boosting economic developments amid a world economic recession. The international commodity price is expected to enter a new round of rise.     According to him, the PBOC will adopt flexible and prudent macro-control policies to strive for the stability of the country's financial sectors and promote sound and rapid economic growth.     Zhou said efforts would go to other specific fields, including establishing financial risk monitoring mechanism, enhancing cooperation among domestic and overseas financial organs, and ensuring liquidity in the banking system.     He also urged strengthening foreign exchange management through enhancing cross-border capital flow management and supervision, in a bid to avoid losses and risk caused by speculation activities.     The central bank would keep a close look over the real estate sector and improve financial services in this sector, he added.     Zhou said that the impact of the world financial crisis on China's economy cannot be underestimated. However, the country's economic situation is sound as a whole, and is capable to effectively resist the external impact.     China's financial sectors have grown stronger after years of development. BERLIN, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in the German capital Berlin late Wednesday for an official visit to the country.     The premier is scheduled to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Vice Chancellor Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations and further cooperation between the two nations amid the global financial downturn.     Upon his arrival, Wen said in a statement that currently Sino-German relations are faced with a sound opportunity of development.     The two nations have maintained frequent high-level contacts, and economic and trade cooperation has been expanding steadily, Wen said.     Both sides also witnessed fruitful dialogues on such fields as science and technology, education, culture, and youth exchanges, he noted.     Bilateral consultation and coordination on international affairs have also been strengthened, he added.     The premier expected his meeting with Merkel would further enhance mutual trust and broaden consensus between the two nations.     Wen also expressed the belief that his visit will further push forward the Sino-German partnership, which bears a global responsibility.     Meanwhile, the premier, on behalf of the Chinese people, extended Chinese lunar new year greetings and good wishes to the German people.     During his two-day visit to Germany, Wen will also attend a forum on Sino-German economic and technical cooperation and deliver a speech.     Germany is the second leg of Wen's European tour after Switzerland, where he attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF). BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or Cabinet, agreed in an executive meeting on Wednesday to speed up the reform and development of the inland Chongqing municipality.     China has four municipalities: Beijing, Tianjin in the north, Shanghai in the east, and Chongqing in the southwest.     "Local authorities are required to accelerate the overall development of rural and urban areas and promote environmental protection and natural resources conservation, to turn Chongqing into an important growth pole in western region," according to the meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     Local governments should help people in the Three Gorges area to develop local pillar industries, modern agriculture and improve rural production and living conditions, according to the meeting.     The city should also step up construction of a new district in its north and a newly-approved bonded zone and carry out regional economic cooperation.
