BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior military officials of China and Myanmar agreed on Saturday to strengthen the relations of the two countries and armed forces in an all-around way.     The two countries should enhance military and state-to-state exchanges to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity, said Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), while meeting his Myanmar's counterpart Shwe Mann.     Chen said the two sides have maintained cooperation in various fields, and witnessed smooth development in their military ties.     He hailed the firm support to each other in terms of national development and international affairs, especially those touching on the core interests of both nations.     As good neighbors since ancient times, China and Myanmar have helped each other to fight external aggression and to struggle for respective national independence and liberation in modern history, Chen said.     Shwe Mann, also member of the ruling Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in an all-around way.     He expressed appreciation for China's long-term support to Myanmar and reaffirmed Myanmar's adherence to the one-China policy.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- China had "unprecedented dynamic interaction" with the rest of the world in 2008, receiving some 180 heads of state or government, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when addressing a new year reception in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. State Councilor Dai Bingguo and more than 400 foreign diplomats and Chinese officials were also present.     Yang said the cooperation between China and the rest of the world was further consolidated and enhanced amid the natural disasters, Beijing Olympics as well as the international financial turmoil.     The year 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up. BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with the foreign guests attending the 2008 Annual General Meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on how China could properly handle the relation between stable, fast economic growth and environmental protection, and achieve sustainable development, against the backdrop of the aggravating global financial crisis and the downturn of global growth. BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's government on Friday pledged to make every effort to ensure the safe release of the crew of a Chinese fishing boat seized by Somali pirates off east Africa.     The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying it was still assessing the situation and trying to obtain more information on the vessel, which was overrun late on Thursday.     The ministry would work with organizations abroad to ensure the safe release of the crew, according to the statement.     The vessel, owned by Tianjin Ocean Fishing Company, was hijacked by pirates armed with grenade launchers and automatic weapons off the coast of Kenya and was being held off the southern Somali port city of Kismanyu, according to reports on Friday.     The 24 crew comprised 16 Chinese, one Japanese, three Filipinos and four Vietnamese, according to China's Ministry of Transport.     A Somali pirate leader reportedly said all the crew members were "fine".

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. president-elect Barack Obama Saturday discussed in a telephone conversation relations between China and the United States and major international issues of common concern, including the ongoing global financial crisis.     In the telephone conversation, Hu expressed appreciation to Obama for emphasizing in his election campaign speeches the great importance of China-U.S. relations, and for advocating the strengthening of China-U.S. cooperation in jointly responding to global challenges and in sharing global development opportunities.     Hu pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 30 years ago, bilateral relations have generally kept developing despite setbacks, scoring hard-earned achievements and bringing about tangible interests to both nations.     As the largest developing nation and the largest developed nation, China and the United States share extensive common interests on issues related to world peace and development, and both assume important responsibility in this regard, Hu said.     In the new historical period of time, China is willing to maintain high-level exchange with the United States and also contacts at all levels, continue strategic dialogue with the United States, increase exchange and cooperation between the two countries in all fields, and strengthen the exchange of opinion and coordination with the United States on major international and regional issues, the Chinese president noted.     China and the United States should respect each other and accommodate each other's concerns, and appropriately settle sensitive issues between the two countries, particularly the Taiwan issue, in order to promote the China-U.S. relations of constructive cooperation to a higher level, he said.     Speaking on the same occasion, Obama said that China is a great nation and that China's development and success meet U.S. interests.     On today's international arena, U.S.-China relations are relations of vital importance. BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or Cabinet, agreed in an executive meeting on Wednesday to speed up the reform and development of the inland Chongqing municipality.     China has four municipalities: Beijing, Tianjin in the north, Shanghai in the east, and Chongqing in the southwest.     "Local authorities are required to accelerate the overall development of rural and urban areas and promote environmental protection and natural resources conservation, to turn Chongqing into an important growth pole in western region," according to the meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     Local governments should help people in the Three Gorges area to develop local pillar industries, modern agriculture and improve rural production and living conditions, according to the meeting.     The city should also step up construction of a new district in its north and a newly-approved bonded zone and carry out regional economic cooperation.

BANGKOK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The first Chinese charter plane organized by Chinese government landed Saturday afternoon at U-Tapao airport, some 180 kilometers from Bangkok to bring back home Chinese tourists stranded in Bangkok due to anti-government protestors' siege of the two Bangkok airports.     The first flight from China Eastern Airlines, a A300 airplane, arrived at about 4:30 p.m. local time (0930GMT) at the small and crowded military airport to board 261 passengers back to Shanghai. It will be followed by four other charter planes, from the China International Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.     The five planes will take the first batch of some 1,400 stranded Chinese back to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, hopefully to take off on late Saturday. Chinese tourists, once stranded after the closure of airports in Bangkok, arrive at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, in Shanghai, on Nov. 29, 2008. The 46 tourists returned to Shanghai on Saturday aboard a Dragonair flight. They had to drive to Phuket island, more than 1,000 km south of Bangkok, to be flown to Hong Kong and then the Chinese mainlandChinese Ambassador to Thailand Zhang Jiuhuan, who arrived at the airport to receive the first flight, said that the Chinese government has arranged the second batch of planes to fly to Thailand on Sunday.     At the airport, which the Thai government made a make-shift international air departing port, over 10,000 passengers flooded into the airport since the morning, causing heavy traffic jam on ways from Bangkok towards the airport.     Nearly 100,000 passengers have missed flights since People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protestors besieged and shut down Bangkok's two main airports Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang domestic airport on Tuesday. The total number of the affected travelers could hit 300,000 as the two airports remained closed, Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said Saturday.     The total of stranded Chinese, including those from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, was estimated at about 4,000, according to the Chinese Embassy here.

BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao warned on Saturday that the global financial turmoil will make it harder for China to maintain the pace of its economic development in the near future.     China is under growing tension from its large population, limited resources and environment problems, and needs faster reform of its economic growth pattern to achieve sustainable development, said Hu when addressing members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     The nation should maintain a stable and relatively fast economic growth, accelerate structural readjustment for sustainable development, and stick to reform and opening up, said Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.     Efforts should be made to solve problems that concern the people's fundamental interests, in order to achieve healthy and rapid economic and social development and improve people's living, the CPC chief said.     Hu also underlined the importance of efficient resource utilization and environmental protection in China's industrialization and modernization strategy, and asked for the overall development in both rural and urban areas.     The nation should not only seek fast and sound economic growth, but also promote the comprehensive development of society and its people, said Hu.     He also noted that with the spread of the global financial crisis, China is losing its competitive edge in the world market as international demand is reduced.     International competition is fiercer than ever and protectionism has started to increase in investment and trade, said Hu.     In October, China's export growth slowed to 19.2 percent from 21.5 percent in September.
