SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Tuesday that China will become even more important globally and Singapore must find opportunities to ride on China's growth.Speaking at the Business China spring reception on Tuesday night, Goh said that China has over the past year weathered the global economic downturn with exceptional resilience.Despite shrinking external demand and rising unemployment, China's timely and bold policy responses have enabled its economy to grow at a sizzling 8.7 percent last year, he said, adding that China is now reinforcing its role as the engine for growth in Asia, if not the world.Goh said that the city state recognized China's potential early, soon after China began to open up its economy in 1978.Because of the early efforts made by the Singapore government and Singaporeans, China is today the city state's third largest trading partner and top investment destination, Goh said.As for riding on China's growth, Goh said that the Singapore government will help its companies gain an even stronger foothold in China, and continue to catalyze business opportunities in China.The seven provincial-level business councils, as well as other high-level dialogues and platforms, help open opportunities for companies, reinforce the Singapore brand name and increase its mindshare in China, Goh said.

BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's police departments will launch a 30-day campaign starting Wednesday to hunt down fugitives who are suspected of having committed a crime known as fake invoice fraud.The campaign will have a code name known as "spring thunder", said Liu Jinguo, Vice Minister of Public Security.While addressing a teleconference Monday, the vice minister said: "As the Spring Festival is drawing near, the demand for fake invoices remains strong. Perpetrators will get on the move."Statistics show that the police across the country uncovered 237 cases involving fake invoice fraud and detained 234 suspects in January. They also destroyed eight large sites making and selling fake invoices, and confiscated more than 12 million fake invoices in the past month.Fake invoice vendors are common in Chinese cities, where they offer receipts used for tax purposes. Such invoices could cause huge losses in tax revenues and could feed illegal activities, such as smuggling, money laundering and corruption.The Spring Festival, or the New Year's Day on the Chinese lunar calendar, will fall Sunday. It is an occasion for reunions of relatives and friends, completed with much fun and plenty of eatings. Spring Festival is the most important event for people of Chinese origin.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's UN Ambassador Zhang Yesui on Wednesday called on concerned parties to create " favorable conditions" for an early resumption of Palestinian- Israeli peace talks.Addressing the Security Council in an open debate, Zhang, the council president for January, said that China remains "deeply concerned over the stalemate in the Middle East peace process and the bleak prospects for resumption of the peace talks.""We hope the parties concerned will strengthen their belief in the peace talks,overcome the difficulties and interruptions, create favorable conditions for an early resumption of the peace talks, and avoid acts that may erode the mutual trust or prejudge the outcome of the negotiations," he said.Zhang urged Israel to freeze all settlements activity and cease the building of separation walls."We urge Israel to open all the border crossings to Gaza, and ensure that the region achieves reconstruction as soon as possible and its people return to normal life," he said.Zhang also emphasized the importance of Palestine's internal reconciliation, voicing hope that all factions "bear in mind the long-term interests of the nation and work together to strive for the Middle East peace process."He also urged the international community to "redouble its efforts to push for all parties to build the momentum for negotiations and inject new impetus into the peace process."

BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Lawmakers from ethnic minorities in northwestern China's Qinghai Province on Wednesday urged for more favorable policies for the minority groups with small population, or the groups each with a population of less than 100,000."I hope the country will provide more support for industries with ethnic features in the the formulation of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015)," said Han Yongdong, who is also head of Qinghai's Xunhua Salar Autonomous County government."We also need more support for education and employment. Those policies would help the small ethnic groups cultivate an independent 'blood-making' capability to sustain their own development," said Han from Salar, one of China's 22 ethnic groups with small population.Compared with the country's booming coastal regions, regions where ethnic groups with small population live, mostly in central and western inland regions, remain relatively backward.To accelerate the development of the regions where ethnic groups with small population live, China's State Council passed in 2005 a guideline, promising to build roads, schools and basic medical institutions, and provide them with access to electricity, TV and phone service, and drinking water, in addition to sufficient farms and pastures to live on.According to statistics from the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, China had invested more than 2.5 billion yuan (about 368 million U.S. dollars) in 8,065 projects aimed to support small ethnic groups between 2005 and November 2009.But for Qiao Zhengxiao, another deputy to the NPC and Party chief of the Qinghai University, the aid to ethnic minority groups was still not enough."The central government mainly focused on Tibet and other regions of ethnic groups with relatively larger population last year and this year," said Qiao, from the Tu ethnic group."I hope the government will attach more importance to ethnic groups with smaller population in the future," he said.He suggested ethnic minority groups each with population less than 300,000 be covered by the favorable polices passed in 2005.Meanwhile, Han Yongdong also suggested that museums and research projects should be set up to protect the small ethnic groups' culture."My own kid cannot speak the Salar language. SANYA, Hainan, March 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) said Sunday China is expected to become the world's largest tourist destination by 2015."China, as we predict, is going to become the world's No. 1 tourist destination by the year 2015," said Taleb Rifai, secretary general of the UNWTO."China is almost there. It is now the world's fourth largest destination when it comes to incoming tourists, and the rates of growth are moving so quickly that we think this is a realistic target," Rifai said.France is currently the country receiving the most international tourists, at 80 million per year, followed by the United States and Spain, both at 60 million a year, while China has about 48 million, he said."China's tourism economy has moved incredibly in the last ten years. The number of incoming tourists rose from 8 million to 48 million. The potential of the growth is still big because of the size of China," Rifai said.Rifai said the global tourism industry is improving but challenges remain due to the weak economy."The tourism industry has to follow and is very much affected by the general economic situation, and for sure the general economic situation has started to turn around. But we cannot call it a full recovery at the moment," he said.

BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland held their first study meeting on the feasibility of a Free Trade Area (FTA) in Beijing on Thursday, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement on its website.The meeting will continue until Friday, the department of international trade and economic affairs of the MOC told Xinhua.According to MOC statistics, bilateral trade between China and Switzerland topped 11.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.Although the two-way trade volume dropped slightly on account of the global economic downturn in 2009, the decline rate was small.Official figures also show that Switzerland is China's ninth largest European trade partner, while China is Switzerland's fourth largest global trade partner.
