ASHGABAT, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's three-nation tour to Central Asia has strategic significance for regional peace and stability, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Friday.     The president has engaged in extensive exchange of views with the leaders of Turkmenistan, South Korea, Tajikistan and Russia on bilateral ties and major international and regional issues of common concern, reaching broad consensus, said Yang, who is accompanying Hu during the tour.     TO DEEPEN COOPERATION, STRENGTHEN TIES     After China's establishment of diplomatic ties with South Korea, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan 16 years ago, its ties with the three countries have enjoyed rapid development, and the fields of bilateral cooperation have witnessed continuous expansion.     During President Hu's visit, China issued a joint communique with South Korea and released joint statements with Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Over 30 bilateral cooperative documents have been inked between China and the three nations.     In Seoul, Hu said China's ties with South Korea should aim at achieving common development of long term, and the two countries should share development opportunities, face challenges together, deepen comprehensive cooperation and enhance coordination and cooperation in dealing with major international and regional issues. BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The government has cut back on import taxes on spare parts of large equipment and canceled the import tariff exemption on some complete sets.     The adjustments were made to support the domestic manufacturing of large equipment, said the Ministry of Finance.     Taxes levied on domestic enterprises for importing key spare parts of large equipment, including ultra- and extra-high voltage transmission equipment and transformers, large petro-chemical equipment and large coal-chemical equipment, would be refunded and injected into the enterprises as investment from the nation, it said.     The policy applied to imports after Jan. 1, 2008, depending on the date of declaration of imports.     In the meantime, the import of some complete sets of equipment by enterprises approved after Sept. 1, 2008 would no longer enjoy the tax exemption. Both domestic and foreign-funded projects are subject to the new policy, the ministry said.     Imports of such equipment by enterprises approved before Sept. 1 would continue to enjoy the previous tax policies until March 1,2009.

They said an official position should not be used to promote a moral model.     "Such a promotion would fuel speculation activities," wrote a netizen dubbed "West Line" at the leading online forum forum.xinhuanet.com, while another netizen said promotion should depend on one's competence.     There were also many supporters of Jiang's promotion, saying that what she did showed she is a good public servant.     Su, the Jiangyou official, applauded the debate, saying "it shows the public are concerned on promotions of government officials and their enthusiasm for politics."     However, he said "we have gone through due procedures and believe she is qualified for her new post."     Jiang, 30, a mother of a six-month old, left her own baby with her parents and took part in the disaster relief work after the Sichuan quake.     Moved by the plight of babies separated from their mothers, she ended up breast-feeding nine of them. The pictures of her breast feeding spread across the country, which earned her a nickname "the police mum."     She has since been awarded laudatory titles of "hero and model police officer" and "excellent member of the Communist Party" by the Ministry of Public Security and the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.

BEIJING, May 28 (Xinhua) -- General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Hu Jintao met with Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon.     Hu said that with the joint efforts of the CPC and KMT, and of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, the political situation in Taiwan has gone through positive changes, and the cross-Strait relationship faces a precious opportunity.     "We should cherish this hard-earned situation," said Hu.     It is the first meeting between chiefs of the two parties since positive changes took place in Taiwan.     Hu invited Wu to attend the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. According to the "common aspiration and prospects for cross-strait peace and development," Taiwan compatriots' participation in international activities would be discussed with priority given to participation of the World Health Organization's (WHO) activities after the cross-strait consultations were resumed.     "I believe that if two sides can work together and create conditions, solutions will be found to these issues through consultation," Hu said.     He stressed that on developing cross-strait relations, the CPC has always adhered to the principal of safeguarding the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and safeguarding the common interests of all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots.     "We care for, respect and believe in the Taiwan compatriots. The credit card business accounts for about 10 percent of the bank's intermediary business, or fee-based income, and is one of the main contributors.     Chinese banks are shifting from its traditional deposit-lending business as they expand their profit avenues.     ''We expect the contribution (of credit cards to profit) to grow by 2 to 3 percentage points annually,'' Li said.     ICBC is among the country's "big four" state-owned banks to speed up the credit card business while their smaller joint stock rivals have already an edge in the market.     China Merchants Bank, the sixth biggest lender on the Chinese mainland, has one-third share of the credit card market. Other state-owned banks, including Agricultural Bank of China, said they are seeking growth as they pursue prudent risk control.     China Construction Bank expects to break even on its credit card business next year, said Wu Huitao, deputy general manager of the bank's credit card center. CCB targets card numbers at 20 million at the end of this year, from 16 million now, Wu said.     Credit cards will be the most important consumer credit product after mortgages, with profit forecast to reach US.6 billion by 2013, accounting for 22 percent of total consumer credit profits, said New York-based McKinsey & Co.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- "Teaching is the most splendid profession under the sun," said Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday, while meeting with elementary and high school teachers at his office in central Beijing, to mark Teachers' Day, which falls on Sept. 10 every year.     Prior to their meeting, Wen showed his visitors around at the former office room of late Premier Zhou Enlai, in the Zhongnanhai compound, where both the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council are headquartered. Wen Jiabao on Tuesday invited eight elementary and high school teachers to his office to jointly celebrate the Teachers' Day, which falls on Sept. 10As a beloved State and Party leader for the Chinese people, Zhou has been a banner for all with his lofty character and style, said the premier, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     During their talks, the premier asked the guests to give their comments on the proposed long-term outline on the country's educational reform and development.     Tan Guoqiang, principal of the Yingxiu Elementary School in Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province, urged the government to deal with the issues of payment, academic titles and housing for rural teachers.     Wen told Tan that the government will give top priority to rural education and improve the teaching conditions in the countryside by "building schools in the safest places." The other seven also gave their opinions on a series of issues including the current educational reform, and professional training, compulsory education for schoolchildren of migrant workers from rural areas.     In his speech, the premier urged entrepreneurs to contribute more to the educational sector. "For entrepreneurs, the best way to pay back society is to invest in education," he said, in reply to a proposal by Liu Pengzhi, president of a local high school, who called for multiplying the resources of investment for education. He urged teachers to love students, students to respect teachers, and society to give priority to education.     "Set students free, and not only allow them more hours to play, as well as give them more time to conduct sporting, thinking, practicing, and understanding society," said the premier.     In his keynote address, Wen called education a "foundation stone" for the nation. China will be built into a first-class country with a first-class education system and first-class talents, he stressed.     Teachers should be far-sighted, patriotic and faithful to their profession, said the premier. He urged teachers to set a good example for students, be more creative so that they can train more creative talents, and make greater efforts to obtain new knowledge to keep pace with the times.     At the end of his speech, Wen showed his profound gratefulness, love and respect for teachers, especially those working in remote, rural and poverty-stricken areas.     After the talks, Wen had a brief lunch with his visitors
