BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday held a telephone conversation with his Ethiopian counterpart Meles Zenawi on relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders pledged to work together to push forward the new type of strategic partnership between China and Africa.     They also exchanged views on China-Africa cooperation, China-Ethiopia relations and climate change.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Wednesday evening for the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference.     Wen told reporters aboard his special plane that his attendance at the meeting aims to show the great importance the Chinese government and people attach to climate change and to assert their sincerity and determination to work with the international community to meet this global challenge. It aims to map out a comprehensive international arrangement for the fight against climate change over the period 2012-2020.

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for more efforts to optimize land use in order to save resources and further economic restructuring.     Li made the remarks during an inspection to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR). As the most populous country in the world, China has been faced with shortages of land, water, energy and minerals, and the shortages were worsened by rapid economic growth, he said. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday that he and U.S. President Barack Obama had agreed to improve Sino-U.S. relations and reached consensus on major international and regional issues of common concern. WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) --The U.S. Commerce Department said on Tuesday that it has set preliminary antidumping duties (AD)on imports of steel grating from China, a move that might escalate trade disputes between the two countries.     The department said it "preliminarily determined that Chinese producers/exporters have sold steel grating in the United States at 14.36 to 145.18 percent less than normal value."     As a result of this preliminary determination, Commerce will instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect a cash deposit or bond based on these preliminary rates.     The product covered by this investigation is a downstream steel product typically comprised of bearing and cross bars used for walkways, platforms and flooring.     From 2006 to 2008, imports of steel grating from China increased 538.44 percent by volume and were valued at an estimated90.7 million dollars in 2008, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.     Commerce said that it is currently scheduled to make its final determination in April 2010.     If Commerce makes an affirmative final determination, and the U.S. International Trade Commission makes an affirmative final determination that imports of steel grating from China materially injures, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, Commerce will issue an antidumping duty order.     The new case followed U.S. President Barack Obama's recent decision to impose punitive tariffs on all car and light truck tires from China for three years, a move quickly denounced by China as a "serious act of trade protectionism."     The protectionist moves by the Obama administration will ultimately hurt the U.S.-China trade relations, which are becoming more and more important due to the global financial crisis, economists warned.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Early and heavy snow storms in north China have killed 32 people, destroyed nearly 300,000 hectares of winter crops, and caused nearly 7 billion yuan (about one billion US dollars) of direct economic losses as of 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     The death toll did not include those who died in snow-caused traffic accidents, the ministry said. TAICHUNG, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan ended a new round of talks Tuesday as the two sides agreed to cooperate in farm produce quarantine and cross-Strait employment of fishermen, as well as to deal with different product quality standards.     In an evening banquet held by the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Tuesday, ARATS president Chen Yunlin expressed his gratitude to the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) and to those in Taiwan who had contributed to the ARATS-SEF meeting.     The fruitful meetings between the two organizations were made possible by both sides across the Taiwan Strait, Chen said.     He said the two sides should continue to contribute to the peaceful development of the cross-Strait ties despite all difficulties.
