SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea plans to launch a joint research with China and Japan on the feasibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) among the three Northeast Asian countries, South Korea's foreign ministry said Wednesday.According to a report by the ministry, the country, which has been seeking an economic integration of the Northeast Asian region by creating favorable conditions for FTAs, will kick off a joint study with the countries, in which government officials, scholars and business representatives will participate.Along with the trilateral FTA, the country will also continue to push for settling separate bilateral trade agreements with China and Japan, the ministry said in the report.Currently, South Korea has free trade agreements with Chile, Singapore and the European Free Trade Association, as well as a similar pact with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.Recently reaching a free trade deal with the European Union, the country also wrapped up its free trade talks with India, settling the so-called comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in August.With respect to the free trade deal with the United States, signed in June 2007, both countries are waiting for legislative approval.South Korea is also seeking similar trade deals with Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Friday bade farewell to renowned educationist Huo Maozheng, who died of illness on Feb. 11 at the age of 88, at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing.State Councilor Liu Yandong joined Premier Wen at the funeral. Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang previously expressed their condolences.Huo was among China's first group of "100 contemporary educationists," a top honor conferred by the government. We firmly opposed to that," spokesman of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology told Xinhua in an exclusive interview on Sunday."China's policy on Internet safety is transparent and consistent," he said.Internet security was a global concern which required international coordinated efforts. BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- China's export is witnessing a steady recovery as shown by February figures, but uncertainties in the external market could still hamper the revival, political advisors said here Thursday.China's exports grew for the third straight month in February, up 45.7 percent year on year to 94.52 billion U.S. dollars, the General Administration of Customs announced Wednesday.The dramatic increase was a result of a lower comparison basis last year, said Ju Yalian, a member of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and also a senior foreign trade official in the eastern Zhejiang Province, one of the country's key export regions."But compared with figures in the corresponding period in 2008, when China's foreign trade was yet to be hit by the global financial crisis, we could still see a remarkable increase," she said on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the CPPCC National Committee, the top political advisory body.China's exports rose 8.2 percent in February from two years ago while imports were up 9.8 percent.The increase indicated the country's continued economic recovery, and a trend of recovery in foreign trade, she said.However, Ju warned that the recovery in export could bring pressure of yuan appreciation and possible trade disputes.Liang Yaowen, head of the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong, China's southern export powerhouse, also said that the condition is not "so optimistic", noting that China's foreign trade in February dropped 11.5 percent month on month.Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Saturday China's exports may need two or three years to return to the pre-crisis level, as "global recovery is still haunted by uncertainties.""Now it is still too early to say exports will see full-year growth this year," he said on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.

KAMPALA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Monday met officials of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) amidst increased lobbying by international oil giants to enter the country's oil sector.A State House statement issued here said that the CNOOC officials who met Museveni at State House Entebbe, 40km south of the capital Kampala, expressed interest in joining Uganda's oil and gas sector by partnering up with Tullow, an Irish oil company.Tullow, which has oil blocks in western Uganda, is seeking a partner to help it start oil production in the country.The CNOOC meeting comes weeks after Italian oil giant, Eni Spa, also expressed interest in joining the country's oil sector, promising an oil refinery and a power plant.Eni wants to enter the sector by buying stakes of another oil company Heritage Oil which jointly operates two blocks with Tullow on a 50-50 percent venture.The Eni-Heritage deal which is yet to be concluded is embroiled in controversy as Tullow exercised a pre-emption move saying it has the first option to buy the Heritage stakes, a move the government said it would not accept because it would create a monopoly.Museveni told the CNOOC officials joined by Tullow officials that the government will discuss all proposals and announce its decision soon."President Museveni said that the government will discuss all proposals by companies operating in the oil and gas sector adding that the country looks forward to welcoming new companies," the statement said.The Museveni-CNOOC-Tullow meet also comes days after Aiden Heavey, Tullow's chief executive met Museveni urging Uganda to honor contractual obligations following the Eni-Heritage deal.Uganda's recently discovered oil is attracting a lot of attention from international oil giants.So far the country has discovered an estimated two billion barrels of oil and according to experts there is a possibility of discovering more.

BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- China has dispatched inspectors to 16 provinces to urge local authorities to thoroughly investigate cases concerning food safety, the government's latest move against a string of reportedly resurfacing melamine-tainted milk products after a nationwide crackdown in 2008.Any law-breaking concerning food safety will be severely dealt with, an official with the National Food Safety Rectification Office led by Health Minister Chen Zhu said here Tuesday.The unnamed official said the office recently dispatched eight teams of inspectors. The official did not give details on the total number of inspectors involved or their identities.Milk powder laced with melamine that should have been destroyed has been used, local authorities discovered.Media reports said melamine-tainted dairy products have resurfaced in several Chinese provinces.Melamine is an industrial compound which can give a false positive on protein tests and cause kidney stones. Melamine-contaminated milk products left at least six children dead and 300,000 sickened in 2008."These cases reveal that the toxic milk powder recalled in 2008 was not completely destroyed and is now illegally reused for new products," the official said.In December 2009, three people from the Shanghai Panda Dairy Company were prosecuted on suspicion of producing and selling melamine-tainted milk powder. Local police said all the company's products had been recalled and that there was no harm to consumers.Another three people from the Shaanxi Jinqiao Dairy Co. Ltd. in northwest Shaanxi Province had also been detained by police over suspected tainted milk powder sales before its products reached retail stores.Food safety issues have became particularly sensitive in China after the 2008 milk scandal. The government has intensified supervision of food safety with new laws and regulations, including the Food Safety Law that took effect on June 1, 2009. Nationwide checks of food safety have also been increased.The official said food safety was a global issue, one that existed in both developing and developed countries.Improving food safety standards is a long-term tough task for China, the official added.

HONG KONG, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Plans of extensive and comprehensive inspection of roughly 4,000 buildings aged 50 years and over will be carried out in a month, said the website of the HK Special Administrative Regional government on Saturday after a building collapse incident."This is a comprehensive check across the territory of all the buildings of this age, which we believed are more or less of similar construction, which is reinforced concrete framed construction," said Secretary for Development, Carrie Lam, after inspecting the scene of the building collapse case in Ma Tau Wai Road Saturday.A five-story apartment building of more than 50 years old in Hung Hom, Hong Kong's Kowloon district, collapsed suddenly around 1:30 p.m. local time ( 0530 GMT) Friday afternoon. Four people were confirmed dead and two others injured."we are going to set up 40 teams of professional and technical staff to go out to various parts of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories to inspect these 4,000 buildings. The target is to complete these comprehensive inspection within a month. We will then follow up with the needed remedial action," she added.Carrie Lam also mentioned she was going to introduce into the Legislative Council a new piece of legislation concerning mandatory inspection of Hong Kong's buildings over 30 years old and also mandatory inspection of windows for buildings aged 10 years and over.
