TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met late Monday with executives of major Japanese media, urging media of both countries to make due contributions to the advancement of Sino-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that both Chinese and Japanese media need to adopt a responsible attitude to report issues concerning bilateral relations and situations of their respective countries in line with the principle of authenticity, objectivity and comprehensiveness in a bid to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.     The media should also proceed from the general situation of Sino-Japan relations to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, focusing more on news reports that are beneficial to closer bilateral cooperation and providing more information that is conducive to China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations, he said.     Exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two nations, such as "Beijing-Tokyo Forum" and "China-Japan Media Dialogue", help to establish new channels and forms for frank, in-depth and rational dialogues as well as a platform for the two peoples to deepen their mutual understanding, he said.     Executives of key Japanese media such as public broadcaster NHK,TV Asahi, The Yumiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News Agency said that it is the common aspiration of both peoples as well as their historical responsibility to promote the steady and sustained growth of Japan-China relations.     They also made proposals on advancing exchanges between media of the two countries, expanding bilateral cooperation on economy and trade and improving feelings the two peoples harbor toward each other.     On Tuesday, Li visited the headquarters of The Yumiuri Shimbun and NHK, inquiring in detail about the management and operation of the two Japanese media.     Li arrived here Sunday for an official goodwill visit. Japan is the third leg of his four-nation tour, which has already taken him to Australia and Myanmar. Li is to conclude his visit to Japan Wednesday and leave for the Republic of Korea.

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Different levels of governments should collect strength to combat drought, which has crippled China's agriculture, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday.     He urged efforts to give drought-relief work top priority.     Hui said the people should build up their confidence and make every effort to overcome difficulties despite severe challenges.     He also asked local governments to strengthen management, adopt effective measures and enhance agricultural technology services sothat farmers could get timely help and guidance.     Financial and material support should be ensured, he added.     Lack of rainfall has led to severe drought in northern China, leaving more than 140 million mu (9.3 million hectares) wheat affected, said the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) head on Tuesday.     As of Monday, 141 million mu wheat in six major grain production provinces, including Henan, Anhui, Shandong, Shanxi, Gansu and Shaanxi, were hit by drought, MOA minister Sun Zhengcai said in an anti-drought video conference.     About 145 million mu crops have been affected by the drought nationwide, or 40 million mu more than the same period last winter, according to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     The figure indicated that almost 43 percent of the country's wheat was affected.     Sun said little rain fall since last October was the main reason for the prolonged drought in most of the northern areas, and frequent cold snaps this winter made the situation worse.     According to Monday's weather report by China Meteorological Administration, severe drought in north China was expected to continue as no rain has been forecasted for the next ten days.     The MOA warned that more wheat fields could perish if drought continues to linger.     To cope with the problem, the MOA asked agricultural departments of every level to collect all of their strength to channel water, enhance irrigation and fertilization.     MOA has sent 12 working teams of experts to the drought-hit provinces, to instruct farmers on drought relief work. If the signs of recovery could appear in the second half of this year or in this summer, then the world could gradually walk out of this financial crisis.     In another report, the IMF said on Thursday that the world economy is expected to contract in 2009 for the first time in 60 years as advanced economies will shrink sharply.     Global activity will contract by 0.5 to 1 percent on an annual average basis, the first such fall in 60 years, the IMF said in an analysis provided to the Group of 20 (G20) industrialized and emerging market economies.     Advanced economies will suffer deep recessions in 2009, while the United States will contract 2.6 percent, the assessment said.     Capital injection into IMF at G20     Responding to the question of capital injection into the IMF at the upcoming G20 summit in London, Portugal said the IMF had enough resources to manage the problems the world economy is facing now.     From the start of economic crisis, our credit capability is 250 billion U.S. dollars, among which we have used 50 billion dollars, so we still have 200 billion dollars left, said Portugal, adding that we hope to prepare for the worst to come, if more countries need our financial support. So far, we have got some commitments on capital injection from some countries.     He said that Japan is the first country to make such commitment. BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese share prices registered a dramatic 3.87 percent drop Thursday as investor confidence collapsed ahead of the wary market performance and caused panic selling, analysts said.     The decline on overseas markets also had a negative effect.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, opened higher after the government announced stimulus plans, but dipped 85.05 points, or 3.87 percent, to 2,121.52 points in the afternoon session.     The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzhen bourse dropped to 7,777.90 points, down 463.76 points, or 5.63 percent.     Total turnover was 198.52 billion yuan (29.07 billion U.S. dollars), down from 209.05 billion yuan on Wednesday.     Losers led gainers by 841 to 34 in Shanghai and 719 to 36 in Shenzhen.     The weak performance of both the Wall Street and Hong Kong shares had cast a shadow over the mainland market, said analysts.     The financial sector, which led a market rebound Wednesday, failed to support the market in afternoon trading as it dipped 4.76 percent.     Shenzhen Development Bank, which almost fell by the 10-percent daily limit, ended up with an 8.91 percent drop to 13.8 yuan.     China Merchants Bank, which rose by 9.57 percent Wednesday, slipped4.36 percent to 14.27 yuan.     Machinery, automobiles, media and semiconductor sectors led the retreat, dropping 7.88 percent, 7.54 percent, 7.68 percent and 7.79 percent, respectively.     Non-ferrous metals also fell by 7.54 percent though the government announced a stimulus package for the industry Wednesday.     Chenzhou Mining, Corun New Energy, Tibet Mining, Advanced Technology and Materials, Western Metal Material, Sichuan Hongda and Xiamen Tungsten fell by the 10-percent daily limit.     Yongan Forestry bucked the trend, rising by the 10-percent daily limit. BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Railways (MOR) signed a deal with state-owned vehicle producer CNR Corporation Limited (CNR) here Monday to purchase 100 high-speed CRH trains for 39.2 billion yuan (about 5.74 billion U.S. dollars).     CRH, an abbreviation for China Railway High-speed, refers to trains with speeds above 200 km per hour. With a designed speed of 350km/h, the new CRH trains will travel between Beijing and Shanghai in 2011, when the construction of the 1318-km, high-speed railway between the capital city and the country's financial hub is expected to complete.     "The contract does not include any foreign parties, as Chinese companies possess core technologies for the high-speed trains and have complete intellectual rights over the 350km/h CRH type," said Zhang Shuguang, director of the transport department under the MOR.     The MOR had introduced railway technologies from Japan, France, Germany and Canada in the development and production of the 200km/h CRH trains already in operation at present.     According to the agreement between the ministry and CNR, all 100 trains will be self-developed and manufactured under the CNR group. Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. and Changchun Railway Vehicle Co., two CNR subsidiaries, will be in charge of the production of 60 sets and 40 sets, respectively.     Zhang said China would see "large purchases" of CRH trains in the coming years upon the completion of more passenger railway lines across the country.     The MOR has planned to spend 500 billion yuan to buy trains over the next four years.     "The purchases will provide strong support for related industries," Zhang said.     The manufacturing of a CRH train requires nearly 100,000 parts from a wide range of industries such as mechanics, metallurgy, electrics, chemical, and materials.     "We will buy more CRH trains this year as a move to help stimulate domestic demand," said Zhang without giving further details on the purchasing plan.
