BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday that President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to Japan would have a profound impact on bilateral strategic and reciprocal relations.     "President Hu's trip is a great event in Sino-Japanese relations in the new period," Xi told visiting Yoshinobu Ishikawa, governor of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan.     Xi said this trip would promote mutual understanding and friendship as well as substantial cooperation between the two countries.     He expected the two countries to seize the chance to become good neighbors and partners featuring peaceful existence, long-term friendship, reciprocal cooperation and common prosperity. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin urged here on Wednesday that the role of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in scientific and democratic policy-making should be strengthened.     "We should increase the forms of political consultation and make it an important aspect in making scientific and democratic policies," Jia, chairman of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, said at a seminar held by political advisory body.     Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed improving democratic supervision in three phases: information, communication and feedback.     Jia said the work in the latter half of 2008 would be extensive and tough, and he urged officials at all levels to closely track changing international economic trends and research the new issues emerging in domestic economic development. DUSHANBE, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe on Tuesday for a state visit and to attend the 8th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, scheduled for Thursday.     Hu flew to Dushanbe from Seoul after concluding a state visit to the Republic of Korea, and was met at the airport by Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon.     During his stay in Dushanbe, President Hu will hold talks with Rakhmon and sign bilateral cooperation deals related to political, economic and trade exchanges, according to a senior official of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     In a written speech delivered at the airport, Hu said China and Tajikistan are friendly neighbors sharing common mountains and rivers.     Since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 16 years ago, bilateral relations have witnessed smooth development with tangible results achieved in political, economic, security and other areas, he said. BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent. BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met separately with German President Horst Koehler and Japan-China Friendship Association Chairman Koichi Kato in Beijing on Sunday.    The meetings took place on the sidelines of the Beijing Paralympic Games, which just opened on Saturday night.
