BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit concluded its first closed session here Friday evening, with the global financial crisis topping the agenda.     Leaders and representatives of the 45 ASEM members attended the meeting which lasted two hours.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chaired the meeting and made the leading speech.     Wen called on Asian and European nations to make concerted effort in response to the global financial crisis triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Wen said the international financial and economic situation is an issue linked up with the direct interests of all ASEM members, and that is why the issue was listed the top subject for discussion.     "Asian and European nations are an important force to safeguard international financial stability and promote world economic growth," Wen said. "We should make concerted effort to show the world our confidence, unity and cooperation," he added.     He said relevant countries and organizations have taken measures in response to the global financial crisis, and China hopes these measures would achieve the desired results soon.     He also called for global action to jointly respond to the crisis.     The leaders present at the meeting had an "enthusiastic and in-depth" discussion on how to tackle the crisis, as well as how to promote Asia-Europe trade and investment, the Foreign Ministry said, giving no further details.     The seventh ASEM summit, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will all together have four closed sessions.

CHENGDU, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than one million migrant workers, who were forced to return home late last year amid the impact of the global financial crisis, have found new jobs in southwest China's Sichuan Province.     Out of the 1.49 million migrant workers who had returned home, 1.03 million have found new jobs through training and job fairs organized by the government, according to the provincial labor and social security department.     About 38 percent of them engage in farming and breeding, 43 percent work in the towns and the rest leave home again and find their new jobs in other provinces.     So far, Sichuan has provided 5,000 training classes to 250,000 migrant workers. It also organized 53 job fairs specifically for the migrant workers, helping some 100,000 find new jobs.     The province is expected to invest 80 million yuan (11.7 million yuan) this year on migrant workers training, up 77.8 percent year on year.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Washington Friday for a summit to discuss issues concerning financial markets and the global economy.     President Hu, and other leaders from the Group of Twenty (G20) members, have been invited by U.S. President George W. Bush to Saturday's meeting, the first in a series of summits to mitigate what economists predict could be a long and deep downturn.     Later in the evening, the Chinese president is expected to attend a dinner hosted by Bush for all the leaders.     "The leaders will review progress being made to address the current financial crisis, advance a common understanding of its causes, and, in order to avoid a repetition, agree on a common set of principles for reform of the regulatory and institutional regimes for the world's financial sectors," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino last month in making the announcement of the summit.     At a press briefing last week, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said that China expects to build a fair, inclusive and efficient international financial system.     "We hope to consult with other participants to reform the international financial system and finally try to establish a fair, inclusive and efficient system," He said.     He said that China would take an active part in the summit-related activities in a constructive attitude, work together with all the parties for the achievement of pragmatic outcome, and impel the international community to tackle the financial crisis in a timely, comprehensive and effective manner.     The members of the G20 include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.     The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF),the president of the World Bank, the secretary-general of the United Nations and the chairman of the Financial Stability Forum have also been invited to the Washington summit.     Washington is the first leg of President Hu's five-nation trip. He will later pay state visits to Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru and Greece. During his stay in Peru, he will attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) forum in Lima.

However, he lost six family members including his son and parents in the earthquake, said a CCTV report.     Defending champion Liu Chunhong broke all the world records in the women's 69 kilogram weightlifting category of the Beijing Olympic Games on Aug. 13, making herself a household name overnight.     Song Zhengyu, a 38-year-old rocket expert, also won nationwide respect for his great contribution to the development of the Long March family of rockets, which successfully sent the manned Shenzhou-7 spacecraft on September 25.     The ten people were selected out of 30 candidates throughout the nation. BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States had signed a memorandum of understanding restricting the U.S. import of archeological items originating in China, a Chinese official said Saturday.     The memorandum was signed in Washington on Thursday by Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Cultural Affairs Goli Ameri, said Dong Baohua, deputy director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH), at a press conference.     The agreement's full name is Memorandum of Understanding Concerning the Imposition of Import Restrictions on Categories of Archeological Material from the Paleolithic Period through the Tang Dynasty and Monumental Sculpture and Wall Art At Least 250 Years Old.     Under the memorandum and U.S. legislation entitled the Convention on Cultural Property Implementation Act, the U.S. government shall restrict the importation into the United States of archeological material originating in China and representing China's cultural heritage from the Paleolithic Period through the end of the Tang Dynasty, the year 907, and monumental sculpture and wall art at least 250 years old.     The U.S. government will promulgate a list of archeological material categories of metals, ceramic, stone, textile, other organic material, glass and paintings, which will be restricted to import from China, unless the Chinese government issues a license or other documentation which certifies that such exportation is not in violation of its laws, the memorandum says.     For the purpose of this memorandum, the restricted Paleolithic objects date from approximately 75,000 B.C., according to the memorandum.     China and the United States are both States Party of the Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. The convention was adopted by the UNESCO in 1970.     For years, the Chinese government has attached importance to cracking down on the stealing, illegal digging, and smuggling of cultural relics and tried to cooperate with the international community in the crackdown, by participating in internationals conventions and signing bilateral and multilateral agreements on the issue.     In addition to the newly-signed Sino-U.S. memorandum, China has signed similar agreements with Peru, India, Italy, the Philippines, Greece, Chile, Cyprus, and Venezuela, according to the official.

After Ethiopia, he will travel to Madagascar and Seychelles.
