SHANGHAI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- A traditional commodity fair in east China, conventionally regarded as a barometer of the nation's foreign trade, reported less demands from American businessmen than expected, indicating a possible slowdown of Sino-U.S. trade.     The 18th East China Commodity Fair, an event held at the beginning of every year, reported around 1,600 American businessmen, far less than expected.     "The number of the American businessmen to the fair was only two thirds of those from the European Union, showing the deficient domestic demands of the United States," said Wang Qingjiang, an official with the fair.     "The subprime crisis in the United States has shown its influence on China's exports," he added.     The 5-day fair registered total business deals worth 583 million U.S. dollars between Chinese companies and the U.S. businessmen, a 1.5 percent dip from last year.     Deals worth more than 3.67 billion U.S. dollars were signed at the fair, a 3.52 percent growth from 2007.     Deals between Chinese companies and the European Union businessmen added up to 879 million U.S. dollars, a 9.5 percent growth compared with the last fair.     Chinese companies and the Japanese businessmen made deals worth906 million U.S. dollars, almost the same amount compared with last year.     The fair attracted more than 19,000 businessmen from 145 countries and regions around the world, with more than 60 percent from Asia.     According to experts, the fair could indicate the trend in China's foreign trade in 2008.

WASHINGTON -- Financial systems in Asia appear well placed to handle the effects of the global financial market turbulence that broke out in July, said a report released by the International Monetary Fund on Friday.The report, Regional Economic Outlook: Asia and Pacific, explained that Asia was not at the epicenter of the recent turmoil, and markets and financial institutions in the region have been less affected to date than those in the United States and Europe."This reflects the relatively small direct exposure to US subprime mortgages and, more broadly, to leveraged and complex structured credit products, including by hedge funds," said the report.But it also warned that markets have begun to normalize somewhat at the time of this writing, although much uncertainty remains.The report expressed optimism about Asia's future economic performance, saying growth has been stronger than expected across much of the region, with domestic demand making an increasing contribution in a number of economies."China and India continued to lead the way, with high growth backed by strong investment, although the contribution of net exports to growth in China continues to rise," said the report."The pace of activity in the NIEs and ASEAN-5 remained solid, with strong investment in the former and strong consumption in the latter," the report added.The NIEs, or Newly Industrialized Economies, refers to Hong Kong and Taiwan of China, South Korea, Singapore. ASEAN-5 refers to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.China is expected to increase 11.5 percent in 2007 and 10.0 percent in 2008, while India is projected to expand 8.9 percent this year and 8.4 percent next year.The Asian economies as a whole will grow robustly at 8.0 percent this year and moderately to a still-brisk 6.9 percent next year, said the report.

BEIJING - China's food watchdog issued an emergency circular on Wednesday to ensure food safety in the face of severe winter weather that has blocked transport and endangered supplies in much of central, eastern and southern China.The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) ordered all the local food and drug bureaus to tighten inspections of food production and sale facilities so as to prevent inferior or fake food from entering the market.The snow, the heaviest in decades in many places, has been falling in China's east, central and southern regions since January 10, causing building collapses, power blackouts, highway closures and crop destruction.The SFDA ordered all local bureaus to maintain food market order and to prosecute law violations, noting supplies of some foods was already tight.The extreme weather in the past two weeks hit as Chinese travelers began one of the world's biggest annual mass migrations for the Chinese Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, the most important festival for Chinese family gatherings.The SFDA also ordered local bureaus to promptly report and tackle emergencies and prevent mass incidents of food poisoning.

Six Uygurs have been sentenced to death or life imprisonment for secessionist activities in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday.They were convicted of engaging in "separatist activities", "training at a terrorist camp" and "illegally making explosives" by the intermediate people's court of Kashgar last Thursday.The six people were believed to be members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which the UN listed as a terrorist organization.Two were sentenced to death, two received death sentences with two years' reprieve and the other two were jailed for life.The court heard that the six had engaged in a series of secessionist activities from August 2005 until this January, when they were arrested.Together, they planned, led and organized a terrorist camp and led two missions aimed at securing explosives.They made 67 grenades and two bombs that could be used for suicide attacks with the 16 kg of explosives they had acquired, Xinhua reported.

Most respondents in 13 countries agreed it was "likely that someday China's economy will grow to be as large as the US economy," according to the opinion poll by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and WorldPublicOpinion.org. "What is particularly striking is that despite the tectonic significance of China catching up with the US, overall the world public's response is low key -- almost philosophical," said Steven Kull, editor of WorldPublicOpinion.org. But the poll showed there is also distrust of China to "act responsibly" in world affairs.  In no country was there a majority who felt that China's economic rise would be mostly negative, but that was not because China is particularly trusted, the pollsters said. Majorities in 10 out of 15 countries said they did not trust China "to act responsibly in the world." But the same number also said they distrusted the United States. "Though people are not threatened by the rise of China, they do not appear to be assuming that it will be a new benign world leader," Kull said. "They seem to have a clear-eyed view that China is largely acting on its own interests." The Chinese themselves are among the more skeptical populations, with only half saying that their economy will catch up with the United States'. Among Americans, the percentage was 60 percent. Only in India and the Philippines did a plurality of respondents say the United States would always remain a bigger economy than China. Wu said events have proved, and will continue to prove, that the principle of "one country, two systems" is workable and feasible and the Basic Law is a sound law able to withstand the test of time.
