BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday urged the country's senior officials to take the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New China as a new start for carrying on its modernization drive while maintain social stability.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when presiding over the 16th group study for the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, which was themed on understanding and practicing the socialist modernization since the founding of New China.     "Many important revelations come up if we look back on how the Party has led people on the path of socialist modernization," said Hu, stressing the importance of upholding economic development as the central task and promoting comprehensive and sustainable development.     Hu stressed the study of the principle of "freeing our mind, seeking truth from facts, be united and look ahead", which was put forward by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.     Hu said that policies regarding reform should be scientific and the methods of practicing these policies should be well-coordinated. Such reform policies should cover economy, politics, culture, society and all other aspects.     Hu emphasized on ensuring social stability while deepening reform.     "Without stability, nothing can be done and even those we have achieved will be lost. We should pay special attention to conflicts occurring among people and solve them properly," he said, adding that various issues that affect social stability should be coped with carefully to ensure people's livelihood.     Hu urged all study members to regard the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China as a new starting point to deepen socialist modernization and made new achievements in building a well-off society.

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy would continue to recover from the world financial crisis in the latter half and expand at the rate of 8.5 percent for the whole year, said a report from the Bank of Communications on Sunday.     The country's economic development was expected to accelerate the pace and expand at 9 percent in the third quarter and 9.8 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the report.     The report indicated that the country would achieve the set goal of 8 percent economic growth for the full year，contributed by a robust domestic investment and consumption.     In the latter half, investment would represent fast increase, boosted by development from infrastructure construction, real estate, and the industrial sector, said the report.     China saw its economy growth slowed down amid the world financial crisis. Its gross domestic product grew 7.9 percent in the second quarter after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first three months.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on bilateral ties, vowing to enhance cooperation between the two sides.     Xi, who congratulated Barroso for his reelection, said China appreciated his efforts in the past five years on boosting development of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between China and the European Union. China believes, too, that the bilateral ties would advance further in a healthy and stable way within the new term of Barroso, Xi said.     Xi said China and the EU, who have formed a pattern of comprehensive, wide-range and multilevel cooperation, have become two important forces to help shape the future international structure into a multipolar world.     Xi put forward a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral relations between China and the EU. The two sides should mull over tangible ways to properly handle disagreements, to foster new cooperation and to firmly stem the torrent of trade and investment protectionism, Xi said.     Third, to always adhere to the principle of equality and mutualtrust. The Sino-EU relations will remove various obstacles and make progress as long as both sides stick to the principle of "mutual respect and mutual trust, consultation on an equal footing, and seeking common ground while shelving differences," Xi said. It will also be important to bear in mind the overall interests of bilateral relations and respect each other's major concerns, Xi said.     China is ready to work with the EU to build Sino-EU relations into a model of peaceful coexistence and friendly exchanges between countries that transcend civilizations, social systems and development models, Xi said.     Barroso offered congratulations on the success of China's impressive National Day celebrations on October 1, speaking highly of the great achievements of China in the last 60 years.     Sino-EU relations have seen remarkable achievements, he said, adding that the past five years have witnessed frequent top-level exchanges, fruitful personnel and cultural exchanges, and rapid development of economic and trade cooperation.     China and the EU have seen increasing common ground on global issues, including the international financial crisis and climate change, and both sides oppose protectionism and champion a just international order, Barroso said.     In the next five years, the EU will continue developing and promoting the EU and China's comprehensive and strategic partnership and strive to handle disagreements in a mature and responsible spirit so as to further develop bilateral ties, he said.     Barroso also wished the forthcoming Europalia Chinese Art Festival a great success.     Xi arrived here Wednesday for an official visit to Belgium, the first leg of his five-nation European tour. He will also visit Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.  

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called for deep recognition of the historic necessity and enormous advantages of China's political system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     The natural difference between the political systems of China and the West must be deeply recognized, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau at Thursday's meeting of the presidium of the CPPCC National Committee. Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), who is also a member of the standing committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, presides over the 17th chairpersons meeting of the 11th National Committee of CPPCC in Beijing, China, on Aug. 27, 2009    Jia remarked these while making arrangements for the celebration of the 60th founding anniversaries of both the People's Republic of China and the CPPCC. BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Internet researchers from China and Britain agreed at a forum in Beijing Thursday to enhance cooperation on maintaining a safe Internet environment for children.     The second China-U.K. Internet Roundtable-conference was held from Wednesday to Thursday.     The participants of the conference believed that the two governments and Internet enterprises from the two countries should work together to deal with the challenges brought about by online dangers to children.     They agreed it was necessary to strengthen the protection of young netizens from unhealthy information online, such as pornographic material or exposure to online predators.     Malcolm Hutty, head of public affairs of London Internet Exchange Ltd. said that there should be a "partnership approach" between government, parents and children's organizations responsible for advancing the rights for children.     Hutty said the government should create new protective laws.     "There is a big role for Internet industry ... in raising the awareness and providing ... educational messages about how to protect children," Hutty said, adding that there were responsibilities around ensuring that services aimed at children were made safe for them, particularly in chatrooms and social networking.     Susan Daley of Symantec suggested teaching children good cyber-skills in schools.     Hu Qiheng, chairwoman of the Internet Society of China (ISC), said that it was the responsibility of the government, parents and schools to safeguard the rights of young netizens.     Internet enterprises should also provide technological support to parents in installing protective software, she said.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, by the end of 2008, about 108 million Chinese Internet users were under 19 years old.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China vows to strengthen the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the run-up to the National Day celebrations, amid fears that the situation will worsen through autumn. According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. There have been no deaths from A/H1N1 in main land China.

PINGYAO, Shanxi, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition exclusively dedicated to Canadian surgeon Henry Norman Bethune opened Saturday at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in north China's Shanxi Province.     Bethune is a household name in China, a country where he saved numerous lives and sacrificed his own in 1939 during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression.     "He is noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people," Chairman Mao wrote in his article In Memory of Norman Bethune.     The exhibition consists of 41 photos of Dr. Bethune living and working in China, some of which had never been shown before.     "As Canadians, we are all proud to be associated with this visionary adventurer and deeply touched by the respect and recognition shown to him here in China," said Canadian Ambassador to China, David Mulroney.     Most of the pictures were provided by Wang Yan, daughter of ShaFei, who was a forefather of China's news photography and a close friend of Bethune.     "I remember that I was touched when I first read about Bethune in my school days and now it feels like looking at the pictures of an old friend who has just passed away," said visitor Wu Jun.     "Many people love Bethune for they have learnt his deeds and spirit in Chairman Mao's article while my affection for him comes from his friendship with my father," Wang said. "Bethune was my father's mentor as he exemplified the essence of communism."     Upon his death Bethune left his Kodak Retina camera to Sha Fei.     Bethune also healed Japanese soldiers, took pictures of them, which were sent back to Japan.     "He wished the Japanese people would protest against the war when they saw how their sons were suffering on battlefield. He was a true humanist," Wang said.     Just before he died, Bethune wrote in a letter, saying that the last two years (those he spent in China) have been the most significant, the most meaningful years of his life.
