Senior officials of China and the United States gathered here on Tuesday to discuss various business and trade issues in order to seek ways to facilitate bilateral economic relations between the two countries. The Chinese government has always been attaching great importance to consolidating and developing China-U.S. economic relations, and we have done a great deal of work in terms of promoting trade balance and strengthening intellectual property protection," said Wang.    The Chinese vice premier co-chaired the one-day meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab. Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer also attended the meeting.    Wang said the meeting has secured mutually beneficial win-win results, and would go a long way to promote bilateral cooperation and create a good atmosphere for the next China-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), which will be held later this year.    Like SED, the JCTT is a major cooperation mechanism between the two countries to resolve problems and disputes regarding investment and trade issues through dialogue and discussion, according to Wang.    Echoing Wang's remarks, Gutierrez described Tuesday's meeting as "a very robust session with very robust outcomes."    He said the U.S.-China economic relationship has been the fastest growing one that his country has ever seen.    "The U.S. is today China's No.1 export market, and China the U.S.' No. 3 export market. The relation is growing so fast, so quickly, probably unique in history. And we manage this," said Gutierrez.    He mentioned that the two-way trade volume between the two countries had grown to 380 billion dollars last year from only 4 billion dollars when the JCCT mechanism was initially established in 1983.    During Tuesday's talks, the two sides reached consensus on a wide range of issues, including intellectual property protection, medical equipment acquisition and information security, officials said.    Ahead of this, five bilateral agreements were signed by senior officials from the two sides in areas like agricultural cooperation, food safety, trade statistics and rural information and communications technology development.    The Chinese side also announced to lift bird flu-related ban on poultry products from seven U.S. states including New York, and conditionally resume imports of American beef, while the U.S. side expressed its stance against trade protectionism and promised to push for the lifting of trade barriers against some Chinese products like see food, fruit and woodcraft.    Tuesday's meeting marked the 25th anniversary of the China-U.S. JCCT commission, a high-level government-to-government dialogue seeking to open market opportunities and resolve trade disputes between the two countries.    Wang was leading a big delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and other ministries for the event.

DUSHANBE, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Leaders attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the Tajik capital issued a joint declaration Thursday on security, energy and several other issues.     The declaration was signed by Chinese President Hu Jintao, his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon and his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov.     ON USE OF FORCE     The leaders agreed that any attempt to solve problems by merely resorting to force could not work and would only hinder a comprehensive settlement of local conflicts, the declaration said.     A comprehensive solution to existing problems can be found only by taking into account the interests of all parties involved and including them all in the negotiation process rather than isolating any of them, said the declaration.     Any attempt to strengthen a country's own security at the expense of that of others is detrimental to maintaining global security and stability, it said.     On the issue of South Ossetia, the SCO members expressed their deep concerns over the tension triggered by the South Ossetia conflict, and called on relevant parties to solve existing problems peacefully through dialogue, strive for reconciliation and push for negotiations. Chinese President Hu Jintao (3rd L) poses for group photos with other leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan, on Aug. 28, 2008, during the annual summit of the organization.ON SECURITY COOPERATION WITHIN SCO     The member states of the organization were satisfied with increased cooperation within the SCO framework in their fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism, the declaration said.     The SCO members reiterated their efforts to maintain the central coordinating role of the United Nations in the global fight against terrorism, and to steadfastly implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and to finalize a comprehensive convention on fighting global terrorism at an early date.     The leaders also pledged to establish a mechanism of joint assessment, prevention and response to external threats and challenges to regional security.     On the issue related to the creation of a global anti-missile defense system, they stressed that the establishment of such a system will not help in maintaining a strategic balance, runs counter to international efforts towards arms control and nuclear non-proliferation, and is not conducive to enhancing trust among countries and regional stability. ON ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT     Against the backdrop of global climate change, it is of special significance for the SCO members to forge close cooperation in developing new energy technology, the declaration said.     Therefore, the SCO members should strive to seek a common position to address the negative impacts of climate change and develop environment-friendly clean energy.     The leaders pledged to seek global common development through bridging the technology gap between countries and eliminating poverty under the premises of ensuring all the countries to equally enjoy the benefits of globalization.     They agreed that it was of special significance to implement responsible fiscal and financial policies, monitor capital flows, and ensure food and energy security amid a world economic slowdown.     On the issue of water resources, they said it was of vital importance for the SCO members to conduct dialogue on the efficient use of water resources.     They also promised to strengthen consultation and cooperation in the field of human rights within the UN framework and cooperate with other regional organizations and integration mechanisms on cultural cooperation and promotion and guarantee of human rights.

ZHANJIANG, Guangdong, June 28 (Xinhua) -- After a five-day visit to China, Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer "Sazanami" left the southern Guangdong Province port city of Zhanjiang on Saturday morning.     Sazanami, with its 240-member crew, is the first Japanese warship to visit China since World War II.     A farewell ceremony was held at the port before its departure.     "Please send the love and friendship of the Chinese navy and people back to Japan," Lt. Gen. Su Shiliang, commander of the South Sea Fleet, said to Major-Gen. Shinichi Tokumaru of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. General Su Shiliang (R, front), commander of China's South Sea Fleet, sees off Major-Gen. Shinichi Tokumaru (L, front) of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force at the port of Zhanjiang, South China's Guangdong Province, June, 28, 2008Su added the reciprocal visits symbolized an important step in the communication between the China and Japan defense forces.     Before heading back to Japan, the destroyer will have a drill with the Chinese navy in the sea area near Zhanjiang. It will focus on communication and formation.     During its five days in port, the Japanese crew visited the Chinese missile destroyer "Shenzhen" and toured Zhanjiang's urban area. They also played basketball, football and tug-of-war with the Chinese crew in the rain that has blasted southern China of late.     In addition, officers from both sides held seminars to exchange experiences in disaster relief and other activities.     About 1,000 locals visited the Sazanami with smiles and excitement since it was opened to the public on Friday. Chinese and Japanese military bands also gave live performances for visitors with the Chinese Peking Opera and the theme of evergreen Japanese cartoon "Doraemon" on the playlist.     The destroyer with a 4,650 standard tonnage, set off from Hiroshima for the reciprocal visit. The Shenzhen destroyer docked in Japan late last year.     The Japanese warship arrived here on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, its crew unloaded disaster-relief goods including food, blankets, hygiene masks, disinfectant and other items it had brought for the quake-hit areas in southwest China.     China and Japan, neighboring countries separated by water, havebeen friends and rivals for thousands of years.     The sea has been a major channel in their history of exchange. Xu Fu, a Chinese religious figure, led a team to Japan and mixed with the natives on the islands 2,000 years ago. About 1,000 yearsago, Jianzhen, a Chinese monk, was invited by the Japanese to spread the splendid Chinese culture in the territory.     But as Japan rapidly became a major power in the region during the 19th century, a battle broke out between the two countries on the sea in 1894, with the failure of the Chinese fleet. An unequal treaty was signed between China and Japan as consequence.     During 1931 and 1945, Japanese troops invaded China and the war lasted until the end of the World War II.     Resentment still remains between the two nations as there are disputes on history, sovereignty and the exploration of resources under the sea.     The military exchange came after another breakthrough in Sino-Japanese relations as a result of Chinese President Hu's landmark visit to Japan earlier this year. The two countries announced last week they had reached a principled consensus on the East China Sea issue and Japanese companies were allowed in the development of the Chunxiao oil and gas field.
