BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said here on Sunday that the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no traces of melamine.     It was the fourth round of tests for the industrial chemical since the breaking of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     The tests covered 39 batches of baby formula from 10 brands in six provinces and 133 batches of other milk powder from 45 brands in 18 provinces, the agency said.     So far, 499 batches of baby formula from 53 brands and 709 batches of other milk powder from 142 brands produced after Sept. 14 have been tested and none contained melamine, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of China's top political advisory body met on Tuesday to call for ideas on rural development and reform.     The Standing Committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee will hold its third meeting in mid October. Its major topic is rural development and reform, according to a statement issued after a meeting of CPPCC National Committee chairman and vice chairpersons presided over by Chairman Jia Qinglin.     Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) members will meet from Oct. 9 to 12 in Beijing to discuss major issues about promoting reform and development in the rural areas at the third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee.     Political advisors are expected to discuss the guidelines reached at the Party session, the statement said. "We shall present research findings our political advisors made about rural development and try our best to put forward as many good proposals as possible to the Party."     At Tuesday's meeting, Jia called on political advisors to take an active part in a nationwide campaign to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     The campaign aims to push Party members, especially leading Party members and government officials, to learn how to implement the Scientific Outlook on Development and carry it out effectively.     Political advisors should think about how to implement it in the CPPCC's work to improve its supervision on the ruling Party and participation in state affairs, Jia said.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with Bill Gates, chairman of Bill & Gates Foundation, to discuss issues concerning development and poverty alleviation.     During their talks on the sidelines of the a high-level U.N. meeting for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wen expressed appreciation over Gates' long-term efforts for promoting settlement of issues concerning development.     The current turbulence in the international economic and financial situation, sharp increases in oil prices and food supplyshortage have made things more difficult for poor countries, Wen said. BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or the Cabinet, has ordered government agencies to take immediate actions to rectify the financial abuses exposed by the National Audit Office (NAO) in late August.     All units that misused funds were required to report their rectification results to the State Council before Oct. 31, according to an executive meeting of the Cabinet Thursday, which was presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The NAO found 29.38 billion yuan (4.32 billion U.S. dollars) worth of "problematic" expenditures after auditing the 2007 state budget spending of 53 ministerial-level departments and 368 of their affiliates.     It also found 258 million yuan of disaster relief funds were embezzled and used for administrative expenses or government construction projects.     The meeting decided that more central agencies shall make public their budgets. Eleven of them did this last year.     The Cabinet also reviewed a draft ordinance complementary for the enforcement of the Labor Contract Law, and decided that further revision has to be done before it could be enacted.     The Labor Contract Law took effect on Jan. 1 and has raised concern in China's corporate world because of its enhanced protection of laborers' rights.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The financial crisis and other major issues challenging the world will be discussed in the upcoming summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), according to Liu Jieyi, China's assistant foreign minister.     "The ASEM summit would be convened under the special international circumstance," said Liu at a press conference here on Tuesday.     He added the financial situation was in turbulence and the three major challenges, including food safety, climate change and energy issues, were interwoven.     Under the theme of dialogue, cooperation, mutual benefit and common prosperity, the summit would touch upon these issues.     The seventh ASEM summit will be held in Beijing from Oct. 24 to25.
