SHANGHAI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines on late Sunday announced that it will merge Shanghai Airlines through a shares swap and the two will resume stock trading in Shanghai Monday.     Shanghai Airlines will exchange one of its A shares for 1.3 shares of China Eastern after the former's shareholders are given a 25 percent risk premium, the latter said in a statement filed to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     Shanghai Airlines Chairman Zhou Chi said on June 30 that the transfer of shares will take about four to five months.     Liu Jiangbo, spokesman of the working team overseeing tie-up affairs, said Shanghai Airlines will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Eastern and retain its brand and independent operation.     Liu told Xinhua that the merger has entered a concrete stage after the announcement of the detailed merger plan.     This is a major step to promote the consolidation of regional airlines and to facilitate building Shanghai into an international air and shipping hub, he said.     The merger will give China Eastern, one of China's three state-owned airlines, about 50 percent market share in Shanghai.     China Eastern reported a net loss of 13.9 billion yuan in 2008 because of weak travel demand in the economic downturn and wrong-way bets on fuel prices.     China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines shares have been suspended from trading since June 8 while waiting for the merger talks. China Eastern last closed at 5.33 yuan and Shanghai Airlines closed at 5.92 yuan.     China Eastern is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai and Shanghai Airlines is listed in Shanghai.

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- As millions of Chinese children celebrated Children's Day Monday, Premier Wen Jiabao shared a light moment with 100 young students invited to his office in downtown Beijing.     In two hours squeezed from tight schedule, Wen danced, sang and chatted with the children from all over the country. He encouraged the youngsters to study hard, and to grow up well-educated with loving hearts.     "It is love that brings you together and here today. I hope you understand what love is, how to cherish love and learn to love others," the 67-year-old premier, also a grandfather, told the excited children. VIENNA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Austrian President Heinz Fischer met here Friday afternoon, agreeing to further expand cooperation on bilateral and international issues in face of the global financial storm.     Wu arrived in Vienna Friday morning for an official goodwill visit to Austria. He is the first Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) who visited Austria in the past 15 years. BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan authority opened up the island to Chinese mainland investment Tuesday with 100 categories of manufacturing, service and infrastructure sectors in the initial opening-up list.     The move marks a historic breakthrough of decades-long hopes for two-way investments across the Taiwan Straits.     Under two new regulations in effect Tuesday, mainland individuals, companies and institutions can set up branch offices, wholly-owned or joint-venture companies on the island.     They have to get approval from Taiwan economic affairs authority in advance, according to the regulations.     Investment from firms based outside the Chinese mainland, in which mainland ownership is more than 30 percent, will also be regarded as mainland investment in Taiwan, the regulations said.     In the initial phase, the Taiwan authority allows mainland investment in 64 categories in manufacturing sector, 25 categories in service sector, and 11 categories in infrastructure sector on the island.     Mainland investment would "help Taiwan's economy prosper" and make international investors more confident in Taiwan market, said John Chen-Chung Deng, deputy head of Taiwan's economic affairs authority, at Tuesday's press conference.     The investment would help increase industry capital in Taiwan and make its financial market more vigorous, he said.     Through two-way cross-Straits investments, the two sides could jointly explore mainland and international markets, he told the press conference.     The formalization of cross-Straits investment is a long-term objective, he said. The opening-up will advance in a "gradual" way and "will be expanded as long as the initial investment bears fruits."     The Taiwan authority planned to send a team to the mainland to attract investment in the second half of this year, he said. Taiwan welcomes mainland companies to conduct investigations for investment on the island.     For the convenience of mainland investors in Taiwan, the relevant authority in Taiwan has also set down regulations on issues including medical service, education, financial need and house purchasing for both the investors and their family, according to the official.     BREAKTHROUGH IN TWO-WAY INVESTMENT     Experts said the move marks the end of the one-way flow of capital from Taiwan to the mainland, and is a basic indicator of the normalization of economic and trade ties between the two sides.     Zhang Yansheng, director of the Institute of Foreign Trade under the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said the influx of mainland capital would greatly boost Taiwan's gross production value, tax income and employment.     The investment would not only benefit Taiwan companies harshly hit by the international financial turmoil, but also enhance competitiveness of mainland companies, he said.     Liu Xiaohong, deputy general manager of Quanjude (Group) Co. Ltd., a Beijing-based company that specializes in the famous Peking roast duck, said the newly announced regulations have cleared major obstacles and will accelerate the company's pace to open outlets in Taiwan.     Direct transport, postal service and trade was totally cut off between the two sides since the Chinese civil war ended in 1949.     On Jan. 1, 1979, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, or the top legislature, called for an early realization of the three direct cross-Straits links on transport, mail and trade in its "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan". After 1979, the mainland allowed Taiwan products to enter at lower tax rates or tax-exemption.     In July 1988, the State Council, or the Cabinet, issued regulations encouraging Taiwan compatriots to invest on the mainland.     The mainland has been the largest trade partner of Taiwan since 2003, with annual trading volume surpassing 100 billion U.S. dollars.     Tuesday's announcement came about two months after the mainland and Taiwan reached a historic consensus on allowing mainland companies to invest in Taiwan during talks between the two sides top negotiators on cross-Straits relations.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed concerns about the development of Taliban militants in Pakistan on Wednesday, calling for effective efforts to curb the insurgents advance in the war-torn country.     Speaking to the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, Clinton said that the U.S. government believes Pakistani government shares U.S. goals in defeating terrorism.     However, she criticized Pakistani authorities for having made a peace deal that allows militants in Pakistan's northwest to impose Islamic law in exchange for a cease-fire with Taliban insurgents. GUANGZHOU, May 30 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong Province reported one suspected A/H1N1 flu case late Saturday.     The case involved a 23-year-old Chinese Venezuelan. The female college student left Venezuela Tuesday and flied to Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, Wednesday via Paris, and her relative drove her home in Foshan City, the provincial health department said.     She took a rest at home after showing flu symptoms Thursday and was sent to Foshan No.1 People's Hospital Friday.     Early Saturday, the woman was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu by the Foshan Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The Provincial Center of Disease Control and Prevention reexamined Saturday noon and the result was also positive. The case needs further testing.     China Saturday reported three new influenza A/H1N1 cases, bringing to 24 the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland.     The one in the southeastern province of Fujian involved a local who studied in Canada. The other two in Beijing involved a Chinese American and a Chinese student who studied in the United States.     All the cases but one on the mainland were found shortly after they came from countries hard hit by the A/H1N1 flu epidemic. Seven were in Beijing, four in Shanghai, six in Guangdong, three in Fujian, and one each in Sichuan, Shandong, Zhejiang and Hunan.     Eight cases have been discharged from hospital by Saturday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).     China raised vigilance against influenza A/H1N1 Friday after a patient in southern Guangdong Province was declared the first case of local transmission on the mainland. Medical experts are investigating into and analyzing the local transmission.     The patient, a 24-year-old woman living in Guangdong's capital city of Guangzhou, was believed to be infected by a man from New York on Monday. Guangdong provincial department of health confirmed both as A/H1N1 flu cases Friday noon.     Her flu symptoms have eased, Yin Zhibiao, deputy president of the Guangzhou No. 8 People's Hospital, said Saturday. But as the mainland's first case of local transmission, she would likely stay longer in hospital, Yin added.

SALZBURG, Austria, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo said here Sunday that exchanges between local regions of China and Austria constitute an important part of bilateral relations.     Wu made the remarks when meeting with Simon Illmer, president of the parliament of the Salzburg Province of Austria.     Wu, who is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) to visit Austria since 1994, arrived in Salzburg from Vienna on Sunday morning, continuing his official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu said Salzburg has attracted more and more Chinese tourists with its many cultural relics and beautiful natural scenes. TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here Tuesday.     While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10 million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference.     Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.     Chen has been in detention since last December and faces life in prison if convicted.     He was elected to the post of Taiwan leader eight years ago but was ousted in an election in May last year.
