BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese market has more potential for U.S. exports, especially high-tech products, as only 6.7 percent of overall U.S. exports went to China, said Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman Yao Jian Tuesday.The two countries were each other's second biggest trade partners, and China was willing to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with the United States to promote more balanced Sino-U.S. trade, Yao said at a press conference in Beijing.This aim could be reached if the United States reduced restrictions on exports of high-tech commodities to China, said Yao.Just 7 percent of China's high-tech imports come from the U.S., down from 18 percent in 2003.China's imports grew faster than exports in the first two months this year. BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The government and enterprises should continue to step up efforts in pollution and emission control to ensure targets set previously are met, according to a meeting of the State Council.The government should "slack no efforts" to cut pollutants and emissions to meet the targets as the situation remains "grave", according to a statement issued Wednesday after the councils' executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.The government set the goal to cut emissions of major pollutants, sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 10 percent from 2006 to 2010, the 11th Five-Year Plan period.According to the meeting, the central task at present is to ensure pollution treatment facilities run normally.Vigorous efforts should be made to cut pollution from sectors including thermal power, iron and steel, non-ferrous metal, cement, paper making making, chemical, brewing and printing and dyeing, it said.The statement said the toughest standards should be applied in the management of water resources to ensure safe drinking water for people.Emissions of sulfur dioxide in China dropped 10.4 percent last year compared with that of 2008, Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian said Monday.Zhou said the country's COD and emissions of sulfur dioxide fell for four consecutive years after the targets were set at the beginning of 2006.

TAIYUAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of people in north China's Shanxi Province flooded onto the streets Saturday afternoon and stayed until Sunday morning after earthquake rumors spread in the coal-rich region recently hit by a 4.8-magnitude quake.Major streets, parks and squares in cities like Jinzhong, Luliang, Changzhi, Yangquan and Taiyuan filled with anxious people and private cars. In rural areas, many villagers went out in the open air with their personal property, such as TVs.The Shanxi Provincial Seismological Bureau issued an urgent statement Sunday morning, asking residents to keep calm and not to believe in the quake rumor."According to the quake forecast regulation, only the provincial government can release quake forecast information. TAIPEI, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that negotiating and signing a wide-ranging economic pact with the Chinese mainland was "absolutely necessary" and "needs to be done quickly."Ma made the remarks here when attending a gathering for Taiwan business people with business on the mainland.
