BEIJING - China welcomed Sudan's acceptance of a joint African Union- United Nations peacekeeping force for the country's troubled Darfur region. A Sudanese diplomat in Ethiopia confirmed on Wednesday that Sudan has accepted the mission after receiving assurances that a "hybrid" AU-UN force of 17,000 to 19,000 troops will not be open-ended and Sudan will remain in control of its borders. "China welcomes the deployment of a hybrid AU-UN force in Darfur and the joint statement," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement posted on the ministry's Web site late Wednesday. The Darfur conflict began in 2003 when local rebels took up arms against the Sudanese government, accusing it of decades of neglect. Sudanese leaders are accused of unleashing the pro-government Arab militia, the janjaweed, to fight them - a charge they deny.

BEIJING -- Timothy Keating, US Pacific Command commander-in-chief, will visit China from January 13 to 16, the Chinese Ministry of National Defence (MND) said on Tuesday.During Keating's China stay, senior Chinese generals and officials from the Central Military Commission, the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), Guangzhou Military Area Command and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will meet him separately, the foreign affairs office of the MND said in a press release.The Chinese officials were expected to widely exchange views with Keating on Sino-US military ties, the Taiwan issue, and international and regional affairs of common concern, according to the press release.The four-day tour would also take Keating to the country's financial hub of Shanghai, and Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province. China's production of natural gas rose 23.1 percent last year, faster than in 2006, to 69.31 billion cubic meters as the country used more "clean" energy, an industry association said.In 2006, output jumped 19.2 percent to 58.55 billion cubic meters, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) said. China has sent rescue ships to search for a cargo vessel missing in the East China Sea with 17 Russian crew on board.The China Maritime Search and Rescue Center said on Friday it launched a search and rescue emergency plan soon after a rescue center in Russia's far east informed it of the missing boat on Thursday.The Cambodia-registered ship went missing on its way from Japan to Hong Kong.The vessel failed to arrive in Hong Kong on Thursday as scheduled, and the last radio contact was made with the ship on Sunday, when it was 212 sea miles (391 km) east of Shanghai.Russian rescue officials then informed rescue centers in China, Japan and South Korea of the Captain Uskov's disappearance."Our rescue ships have started searching," Zhai Jiugang, a senior official with China's search and rescue center, said.Vessels sailing in the East China Sea have also been informed by the center's branches in Shandong and Shanghai of the disappearance of the ship, and were asked to assist in the search, he said.The center is also using maritime satellites to help search for the vessel. But by Friday afternoon, there was "no clue about the missing boat, and we will continue to search", he said.The boat, with a cargo capacity of 5,200 metric tons, was built in Japan in 1982. BEIJING -- China's education authority has revoked the license of a private school that took in problem teenagers and claimed to offer strict discipline after it was found abusing students.A Ministry of Education investigation confirmed that staff at Dadongfang Xingzou School, in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, had physically and verbally abused teenage students, said ministry spokesman Wang Xuming at a press conference.The Beijing Times reported in June that a 14-year-old Beijing boy took drugs and jumped from the second floor of a dormitory building in the school after being repeatedly beaten by teachers.The boy said he tried to commit suicide so that his parents could learn what happened to him as he was denied contact with them for the first three months in the school, according to the newspaper story.Some desperate Chinese parents send their children, who do not behave well in normal schools, to boarding schools called "xingzou" schools that offer paramilitary-style discipline."Although schools like the Dadongfang Xingzou School take in problem students, they must follow laws and regulations like other schools. But some of them have done things wrong and many have no proper government approval," Wang said.Investigators found the school had been granted a license as a juvenile training center, but was not qualified as a boarding school or to offer paramilitary education.The ministry had started a national survey of xingzou schools, focusing on illegal education methods and teacher qualifications, and those without proper licenses would be closed, Wang said.As the administration was still working on a regulation on non-school juvenile training centers, it would suspend processing any such applications, he said.According to the Beijing Times, the Dadongfang Xingzou School had hired former military personnel and prison wardens as discipline teachers.

Chief judge Xiao Yang has pledged to keep up the fight against judicial corruption after the nation's court system rooted out 292 judges last year because of unethical deeds. Greater efforts would be made this year to build a "clean court system", Xiao, president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), said in an interview with China Daily. "We must never relax our vigilance on corruption," he said, after he reported to the National People's Congress in early March that, last year, 292 judges were subjected to power abuse investigations, with 109 of them prosecuted. The number of judges charged with corruption was 378 in 2005 and 461 in 2004. However, Xiao, who has been SFC president since 1998, said he had ongoing fears about the "grave situation" of judicial corruption. The 69-year-old chief judge said he "lost sleep" because he was so deeply disturbed by reports of corruption, especially those involving court officials. Corruption involving judges, though in small number, damaged the image of the country's court system and undermined the credibility of the justice system. "We will continue to be serious in handling the official corruption cases," he said. In 2006, two high-level group corruption cases were reported by the Chinese court system. The first involved three top judges from Fuyang Intermediate People's Court in East China's Anhui Province, who were arrested for taking bribes since 2005. Two of the former judges were sentenced to 9 and 10 years respectively, with the other one still on trial. The second case involved five senior judges from Shenzhen's Intermediate People's Court in South China. Three of them were sentenced to jail terms ranging from 3.5 to 11 years, with the other two still on trial. Corrupt judges have disrupted the working of the court system and sometimes resulted in wrong verdicts, Xiao said. A "firewall" against corruption will be consolidated, he said, with the apex court on its way to make four important sets of rules on fee charges, court discipline, judge discipline, and court supervision. The first two sets of rules will be implemented this year, with the other two released for public comment. Of the new rules to be released, he said, court officials are barred from using their influence to seek price discounts in any transactions, to occupy properties under other people's ownership, to collect or to spend money through gambling, to have personal investment managers, or to seek benefits for their family members. Also, beginning last year, the court introduced an "anti-corruption deposit" system. If a 22-year-old court staff member deposits 500 yuan () every year and does not do anything illegal, he will get 300,000 yuan (,600) upon retirement - including his premium and reward.

The age of leaders in CPC provincial committees average 52.9 years old, half a year younger than their predecessors, and 91.6 percent of them received college education, 14 percentage points higher than before.The CPC Central Committee has taken a series of measures to make the election in local Party leadership fair and clean, the department said.In 296 townships of 16 provincial-level regions across China, leaders of Party committees were directly voted by CPC members as pilot projects.The ratio between the candidates and the elected officials reached 100:89 in the election at the provincial level and 100:88 to 100:85 at the county-level.The candidates also received strict scrutiny from the Party discipline departments to ensure they are clean from corruption or scandals.A hot line was set to receive tip-off about malpractice and corrupt candidates during the local Party leadership reshuffle.Thus far, 260 officials have been punished for malpractice.

SHANGHAI -- China will launch its first Mars probe in October 2009 as part of a joint mission with Russia, said sources with the Shanghai Space Administration, the main developer of the probe, on Monday. Researchers are "pressing ahead" with the project for a synchronized launching with a Russian probe, said Chen Changya, a researcher with the Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering, at a space technology exhibition. He said the home-developed Chinese probe is scheduled for completion by June 2009. TAIYUAN -- Fifteen miners have been confirmed dead following Saturday's gas explosion in a coal mine in Linfen City, north China's Shanxi Province, rescuers said on Sunday. Rescue operation is still going on. The gas blast occurred around 1:50 p.m. on Saturday at Pudeng Coal Mine in Kecheng Township of Puxian County. About 30 miners were trapped underground, according to preliminary estimates. "The exact number of miners trapped underground is yet to be affirmed," said a spokesman for Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Coal Mine Safety Supervision. The cause of the gas explosion is being investigated. Pudeng Coal Mine, which is in operation with permits, produces 150,000 tons of coal a year. Zhao Tiechui, director of the State Administration for Coal Mine Safety Supervision, together with local officials have rushed to the accident site to direct rescue efforts.
