BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday highly praised the achievement of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) over the past decade, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the region's return to the motherland.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said Macao was "embracing a bright future" thanks to the mainland's support and Macao compatriots' hard work. Hu made the remarks while attending an exhibition in Beijing marking Macao's achievements in the past 10 years.     "Macao has undergone an extraordinary development over the past decade," he said, adding under the support of the central government and the Chinese mainland, the SAR government fully implemented the policies of "one country, two systems", "Macao people governing Macao" with a high degree of autonomy and the Basic Law. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to an EU statement which denounced the execution of two Tibetans convicted of murder in last year's Lhasa riot.     The Swedish EU presidency released a statement Thursday, denouncing the recent death penalty handed down to two Tibetans involved in the Lhasa riot and asking China to abolish the capital sentences.     "We are strongly dissatisfied with and firmly oppose the EU statement," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a news release.     The Lhasa violence involving beating, smashing, looting and burning in 2008 was a sabotage activity "premeditated, organized and masterminded" by the ** Lama group, who instigated Tibetan separatists in and out of China to fuel up the incident, Ma said.     China's legal institutions have carried out fair and open trials and brought only the culprits of the criminal activities to justice, he said. HOHHOT, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China has invested more than 6.5 billion yuan (959 million U.S. dollars) to preserve grasslands in northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, said the regional government.     The money has been spent on returning grazing land to grassland, restoration of natural grassland and sand source control to prevent sandstorm. The efforts have helped reduce the area of degraded grasslands in Inner Mongolia to 500 million mu (33.5 million hectares) from 700 mu since 2000, it said in a statement.     Since the end of the 1990s, successive droughts, overgrazing and inadequate funding on grassland protection have led to deterioration and desertification of the grasslands in the region.     The region has set the goal of increasing the grasslands' vegetation coverage to 42 percent next year and 48 percent in 2015.     The vast autonomous region, which has a grassland area of 1.3 billion mu, plays a key role in maintaining the country's ecological security, especially in preventing desert threat to Beijing and neighboring Tianjin.

CHENGDU, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will send two giant pandas to Australia Friday for a cooperative research program.     The four-year-old male panda "Wang Wang" and three-year-old female panda "Fu Ni" will stay in Australia for 10 years, said Zhang Hemin, chief of the Wolong Nature Reserve Administration in southwest China's Sichuan Province.     "Wang Wang", which means "net" in Chinese, is 119 kg and "Fu Ni", which means "lucky girl", is 90 kg. They were quarantined on Oct. 21 for their trip to Australia.     "Wang Wang" and "Fu Ni" were transferred to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding Center in Ya'an City after the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center where they were living were destroyed in the May 12 massive earthquake in 2008.     The Australian side had sent veterinaries and feeders of the two pandas to China for training. It had also set up a 10 hectares bamboo planting base, Zhang said.     The two pandas will receive a body check Tuesday before their departure.     China and Australia made an agreement in 2007 on the cooperative research.     Giant pandas, known for being sexually inactive, are among the world's most endangered animals due to shrinking habitat.     There are about 1,590 pandas living in China's wild, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China has vowed to maintain its macroeconomic policy stance in 2010 despite worries that its stimulus is likely to risk fueling new bubbles and overcapacity.     A meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee agreed Friday that the country will continue the proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy next year.     "It is a must for the country to stick to the pro-growth policy stance," said Zhang Liqun, a researcher with the Development Research Center of the State Council, one of China's top think tanks.     "A guarantee to the 8-percent growth target this year does not mean the national economy has been on an independent and stable developing track," Zhang said.     Many uncertainties, both at home and abroad, still weighed on China's economy and it was quite necessary for the government to maintain its policy stance, said Feng Fei, a senior researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council.     China's economic growth has approached its pre-crisis level a year after the adoption of the 4-trillion-yuan (585.6 billion U.S. dollars) economic stimulus package.     The country's economy grew 8.9 percent year on year in the third quarter this year, accelerating from 7.9 percent in the second quarter and 6.1 percent in the first quarter. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States singed a joint statement here Tuesday after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, agreeing that "the transition to a green and low-carbon economy is essential."     Both China and the United States believed the clean energy industry will provide vast opportunities for citizens of both countries in the years ahead, said the statement signed during Obama' s first visit to China since taking office in January.     According to the statement, the two sides welcomed significant steps forward to advance policy dialogue and practical cooperation on climate change, energy and the environment, building on the China-U.S. Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Cooperation on Climate Change, Energy and Environment announced at the first round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues in July and formally signed during Obama' s visit.     The statement said both sides recognized the importance of the Ten Year Framework on Energy and Environment Cooperation (TYF) and are committed to strengthening cooperation in promoting clean air, water, transportation, electricity, and resources conservation.     Through a new China-U.S. Energy Efficiency Action Plan under the TYF, both countries "will work together to achieve cost-effective energy efficiency improvement in industry, buildings and consumer products through technical cooperation, demonstration and policy exchanges," said the statement.     Noting both countries' significant investment in energy efficiency, the two Presidents underscored the enormous opportunities to create jobs and enhance economic growth brought by energy savings.     The two countries welcomed the signing of the Protocol Between the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Energy Administration of the People's Republic of China and the Department of Energy of the United States of America on a Clean Energy Research Center, according to the document.     The Center will facilitate joint research and development on clean energy by scientists and engineers from both countries. The two sides welcomed recent agreements between Chinese and U.S. companies, universities and research institutions to cooperate on CCS and more efficient coal technologies.     With regard to joint efforts on tackling the climate change, the two sides welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Development and Reform Commission of China and Environmental Protection Agency of the United States to Build Capacity to Address Climate Change.     The statement said the two sides welcomed the launch of a China-U.S. Renewable Energy Partnership, through which the two countries will chart a pathway to wide-scale deployment of wind, solar, advanced bio-fuels and a modern electric power grid in both countries and cooperate in designing and implementing the policy and technical tools necessary to make that vision possible.     Shared confidence on the bilateral cooperation in this field was expressed by the statement, which said that given the combined market size of the two countries, accelerated deployment of renewable energy in China and the United States can significantly reduce the cost of these technologies globally.     On the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the two sides agreed to consult with one another in order to explore such approaches--including assurance of fuel supply and cradle-to-grave nuclear fuel management so that countries can access peaceful nuclear power while minimizing the risks of proliferation.
