COPENHAGEN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The impressive celebrations on Oct. 1 has testified that China is now a very important country in the world and holds a strong position globally, a European expert on China said.     The celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China "were very impressive," Kjeld Erik Broedsgaard, professor and director of the Asia Research Center in Copenhagen Business School, told Xinhua in a recent interview.     "I think China now is in a stronger position globally than it was in any times since 1949. The celebrations really testify that this is the case," said Broedsgaard, who has been closely following the development of China for more than 30 years.     China's economic, political and cultural influence has been on the rise in recent years, said Broedsgaard, who has written and edited 18 books and monographs on modern China and East Asian affairs.     Describing China as being at the "forefront in terms of economic development," the Danish professor said China's role is "critical" in tackling the global financial crisis.     On China's political influence, he said China has taken part in "a variety of multilateral for a" in addition to international organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.     The Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 also showed China's increasing significance, he observed.     Culturally, "China is also in a position where soft power is increasing," said Broedsgaard, who is a member of the Advisory Committee of the EU-China Academic Network and the Sino-Danish Joint Committee for Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation.     Many people are interested in the Chinese tradition and culture, while more and more people are studying the Chinese language, he said, taking South Korea as an instance.     There are more people in South Korea studying Chinese than English, he explained.     Confucius institutes have been established in many countries, he said, adding that there is a Confucius Business Institute in Copenhagen.     As for the problems that China faces, Broedsgaard said that "there are always problems when a country rises."     But he said it is useful to remember history and put things in a historical perspective, adding that it is very important to remember that this is the "re-emergence" of China, which was a strong and important country in the past.     To ease the concerns of other countries, China has to relate to its partners and major powers and reassure them that it is a win-win situation in which "I get stronger, but you also get benefit," he said.     Broedsgaard also commented on the party building of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was a focus of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee held in Beijing from Sept. 15 to Sept. 18.     "The whole issue of party building is important because the quality of leadership is important," he said, adding that the failure of the Soviet Union in the 1990s was part of "a question of the quality of leadership."     The CPC has been able to reform, renew and revitalize itself, he said.

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said here Friday that he is proud of Pakistan's brotherly relationship with China and wishes the Chinese around the world well.     Zardari was the chief guest at the National Day reception hosted by Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui at the Chinese embassy.     Replying a question by Xinhua on his arrival, Zardari said, "For the Chinese around the world, I wish them well. I wish them their independence and I applaud the success."     He also said, "I'm proud of the friendship which we have with China. And I'm proud of our brotherly relationship. And I'm with them in this moment of happiness. The people of Pakistan share the moments of happiness with the people of China."     Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, government officials and senior diplomats from other embassies based in Islamabad were present at the reception.     The guests watched dances, songs and acrobatics performed by Chinese troops. BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's move to launch anti-dumping and anti-subsidy probes into imports of U.S. chicken products and vehicles was "based on the facts," Ministry of Commerce Spokesman Yao Jian said Tuesday. When asked if China's investigation was a retaliatory move because of the dispute over tire tariffs imposed earlier by the United States, Yao said at a press conference the investigation was in accordance with the country's anti-dumping and anti-subsidy regulations, and based on facts.     China Sunday launched anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into chicken products and an anti-subsidy investigation into automobiles produced in the United States.     Yao said the probe followed Chinese manufacturers' and industrial associations' demands for an investigation into U.S. companies' dumping activities and government subsidies.     The ministry has received the requests and started evaluations, Yao said.     Ma Chuang, vice secretary general of China Animal Agriculture Association, said 17 member companies, along with other domestic companies, handed over the requests to the ministry.     The United States is the largest chicken products exporter to China. China imported 407,000 tonnes of chicken from overseas markets in the first half of 2009, with 359,000 tonnes, or about 90 percent from the United States.     The U.S. government last Friday imposed special tariffs on tire imports from China. In the next three years, car and light truck tires imported from China will suffer decreasingly punitive tariffs of 35 percent, 30 percent and 25 percent.     On Monday, China asked for talks with the U.S. on the tire tariff issue in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement process.     Yao said the U.S. decision to impose special tariffs on tire imports from China had brought a negative impact to the two countries' trade relationship.     China wanted to have talks and negotiations with the U.S. side on the friction and to practically promote the development of bilateral and multilateral trade relationships, said Yao.     He reiterated that China firmly opposed trade protectionism and discouraged the use of trade remedies measures.

XIAMEN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- China remains the most attractive country for foreign capital, despite that the country's foreign direct investment declined for ten straight months, a commerce official said Wednesday.     "China has been the top destination for foreign capital for 17 consecutive years," Wang Chao, assistant commerce minister, said at the World Capital Forum in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province.     A report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on July 22 showed that China stands first on the list of five most attractive destinations for foreign capital, followed by the United States, India, Brazil, and Russia.     The country has received 48.3 billion U.S. dollars of foreign direct investment (FDI) from January to July this year, down 20.3 percent over the same time last year amid a global economic downturn, Wang said.     Wang said the country's prospects for overseas investment remains optimistic as it would simplify examination and approval procedures toward foreign investors.     It will also guide foreign investment to go to high technology industry, advanced manufacturing industry, energy saving and environment protection industries, in a bid to optimize investment structures.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Putin said here on Tuesday that Russia and China are working on a huge oil and gas cooperation project.     In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Putin said the two countries have signed a 20-year oil supply agreement and laid more than 2,000 kilometers of crude oil pipelines for this. It was the name given to the illegal practice of getting items across the border without official customs approval.     The illegal practice would make the government unable to supervise domestic industries and lead to bankruptcies and unemployment, which might cause more troubles to the society against the backdrop of the financial crisis, he said.     Putin called upon the two countries to establish a set of unified rules, which would be obeyed by both sides, so as to achieve a just, sound and civilized mechanism of cooperation.

TAIPEI, Aug.15 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Morakot has killed at least 124 people and left 56 missing in Taiwan as of 10 p.m. Saturday, according to local disaster response authorities. Another 45 people were injured after the typhoon, the worst on the island in nearly five decades, wreaked havoc across central and southern regions.     Sixty-six people died in Kaohsiung, 25 in Tainan, 16 in Pingdong, six in Chiayi, seven in Nantou, three in Changhua and one in Yunlin.     Nearly 23,700 people have been evacuated, and almost 5,000 are taking refuge in 170 sheltering camps.     Morakot has caused more than 12 billion New Taiwan Dollars (365million U.S. dollars) in damages to agriculture and forestry. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) will mainly redress production overcapacity in six sectors, said Chen Bin, director of the Department of Industry of the NDRC, Thursday.     The six sectors include steel, cement, plate glass, coal-chemical industry, polycrystalline silicon and windpower equipment.     The NDRC also warns of obvious production overcapacity in sectors like electrolytic aluminum, ship manufacturing and soybean oil extraction, said Chen during an on-line interview on www.gov.cn., the website of China's central government.     He said China would fight serious overcapacity in sectors like steel industry and offer guidance for new-born industries like windpower equipment to avoid low level repetitive construction.     China has achieved preliminary progresses in fighting the global economic downturn, but the foundation for economic recovery is not stable yet and overcapacity might lead to bankruptcy, unemployment and bad bank loans if it was not checked in time, he said.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who headed Monday to the typhoon-hit regions in Fujian and Zhejiang, warned Tuesday that the country faces grim tasks of fighting secondary disasters as a result of Typhoon Morakot. Big floods are still likely to happen as heavy rainfall persists in the south and many rivers continued to maintain high water levels, he said.     More than 20 rivers reported water levels above flood-alarm lines in Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui provinces. The county seat of Cangnan is flooded on Aug. 10, 2009 in east China's Zhejiang Province. Rainfall brought by typhoon "Morakot", the 8th this year, has flooded the county seat of Cangnan    Hui asked relevant departments to strengthen monitoring of flooding and forecasts of other disasters, so as to relocate people as quickly as possible to minimize casualties.     Typhoon Morakot has left eight people dead and three missing on the Chinese mainland after a powerful landing in east China Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday.     As of Tuesday afternoon, Morakot had moved into the Yellow Sea, and would gradually pose less threat to coastal provinces in eastern China.
